Our  Focus:

To incorporate local knowledge, equity, information sharing, social networks, and data to improve disaster response and recovery, we found three main focus areas: social connections, aerial imagery, and machine learning. This website serves as a platform for anyone interested in damage assessment and disaster recovery to access the resources from our research and findings.

Project Goals
01
Equity

To improve equitable distribution of resources based on improved prioritization practice

02
Localization

To support local capacity building by localizing scope and efforts of data collection for machine learning

03
Technical Assistance

To implement innovative solutions to machine learning, damage assessments, and equitable and efficient data collection challenges

About the Project

This project is a joint effort by students and faculty within the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program at the University of Michigan and the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) as a Capstone project for the Winter 2022 semester.

National Disaster Preparedness Training Center

The NDPTC at the University of Hawai'i Mānoa acts as the education branch as part of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium (NDPC), a professional alliance of institutions and organizations guided under the FEMA framework. NDPTC employs an extensive series of training events dedicated to developing disaster preparedness and recovery efforts related to natural disasters in coastal communities. The organization has prioritized the development of tools and training modules for emergency managers that integrate emerging technologies to build and sustain resilient communities.
