Astronomy Pictures of the Sun [Image 9]

This page contains images of the sun produced by members of the University Lowbrow Astronomers.

Sunspot Group on August 2, 2005

After Mark Deprest sent us the heads up, I decided to run home during my lunch hour today (August 2, 2005) and grab some images of the sun. These are two of my best shots, taken around 11:45 EDT. The large complex near the center of the disk is active region (AR) 792, with AR 795 and AR 794 at top and bottom, respectively, on the eastern limb. In both pictures north is at the top.

I took the images afocally, using my Nikon Coolpix 800 digital camera, through my 8-inch f/8 Newtonian reflector. The telescope was protected with a 7-inch aperture Baader solar filter. They were taken with the camera mounted to a 14mm TeleVue Radian eyepiece, with a #58 green filter. I digitally processed the images using Paint Shop Pro.
