Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3

Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 and the Ring Nebula
by Brian Ottum

On the evening of May 7/8, 2006 the comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 passed close to M57 (the ring nebula).

Brian Ottum took this photograph that shows the comet and the ring nebula in the same field. At this scale, the ring nebula looks like another star (unless you look very closely). Can you find the ring nebula?

If you have problems locating it, click on the photo and you will get a larger scale photo. You may need to use the “Expand to Regular Size” button to get the maximum scale. (Even then, it may be hard to see).

Brian took three one minute exposures and combined them into the single photograph seen above.
