Earl V. Moore Building History

University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance

Conclusion

The School of Music, Theater, and Dance has made tremendous progress from when it was first opened (then called Ann Arbor School of Music) until now. Even now, each year changes are happening throughout the building. I think it is important to realize two things: first, both students and faculty have outgrown this facility and we are in desperate need of new, more, and better space, and two, the need is known and the administrators are working on it. This building is a historical site having been built by the world-renowned Eero Saarinen and having been the first building on North Campus. At the time, it was an amazingly advanced facility that was a welcome change from finding any available classroom and space all over Central Campus to a brand new building built for the sole purpose of aiding students in their musical studies and development. Now, as technology has changed, the students have changed, and the needs of everyone in this building have changed, it is time for something new. I am very excited to hear about Dean Kendall's "arts district" that is hopefully to start in the next three to five years. This will be a great opportunity for all the arts-- music, theater, and dance-- to be on North Campus together. Until then, administrators are doing what they can to improve the space we have. But of course, it is not about the builidng, but what goes on inside that counts...
