Yerkes Observatory

Another enlargement of the ornamental columns. It shows figures from the zodiac. Also shown are faces who may (or may not) represent the first director and the main financial contributor. A broken stump appears by the nose of the face in profile: it is the remains of a hornet that represented the stinging of the director or financer due to huge sums of money that went into the creation of the observatory. The hornet was later taken to be an affront, and was forcibly removed from the representation.
