This site aims to help users understand mental illness as it was conceived in eighteenth century England. Covered here will be different terms for the mentally ill throughout the ages, diagnoses someone deemed as "mad" could have received, and the various cures and remedies that were used to treat. We have also explored the phenomena of institutions, which were a common place to house and treat the mentally ill. King George III, who reigned during this time period will be profiled along with his struggle with mental illness. Finally, we have included poetry and literature excerpts written about madness or by mad people of the time. Our bibliography, notes, and credits can be found at the bottom of each page and you can navigate through it using the tabs at the top.
