Nephrology and Organ Transplant
Through long-standing collaborations with world-class nephrologists and transplant physicians at the University of Michigan, Dr. Song played a central biostatistical role in numerous influential studies in nephrology, dialysis, transplantation, and kidney allocation. He has served as the lead biostatistician for the NEPTUNE consortium on rare kidney diseases (PI: Matthias Kretzler) and has contributed extensively to major multicenter clinical and translational research initiatives. His work has ranged from the design and analysis of large observational cohorts and randomized clinical trials to the development of novel statistical and optimization methodologies for organ transplantation.
One major focus of his research has been the development of optimal kidney allocation strategies for kidney paired donation (KPD) programs, where Dr. Song served as MPI on an NIH R01 project (MPI: Kalbfleisch/Song). Kidney paired donation seeks to facilitate transplantation among incompatible donor–recipient pairs by identifying mutually beneficial exchanges. The underlying matching problem is computationally challenging and belongs to the class of NP-hard optimization problems. By integrating advanced statistical methodology with integer programming techniques, including Gurobi-based optimization, our work has produced breakthrough methods that substantially improve the efficiency and robustness of kidney exchange systems and have had significant impact on transplantation practice.
