There's no general problem storing PM or FH files on an netatalk
server. We do it all the time. Have you eliminated the possibility of
a CR/LF translation problem? Open your
.../atalk/etc/AppleVolumes.system or AppleVolumes.default and look
for a line that says

# default translation -- note that CR <-> LF translation is done on all TEXT

If it says

. TEXT ????

change it to read

. DATA ????

(Need to restart the afp server). Or better still, recompile netatalk
with CR/LF translations off. Read "man afpd" for details.
