Mac OS X won't be using /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow at all. What Mac OS X
uses is called NetInfo, which similar to NIS. Pretty much everything on
the system is handled by NetInfo, included user accounts, system services
(including NFS), etc. Its actually quite a nice system, but without some
sort of firewall it is quite insecure.
