Subject: Linux on Mac files

Hi,
Much to my suprise, I discovered today that when I change the
name of a Mac file or copy and paste a Mac file while in Linux
that the file becomes unusable to Mac users (looses it's creator
and type). Later I was testing a new SCSI tape backup and was
pleased to learn that I could backup and restore a Mac file from
Linux and maintain usability by Mac users.
Is there a way to recover the Mac file creator and types if a
Linux command loses it?
