Thank you for your interest in our program! The Medical Physics Certificate Program at University of Michigan is administered by the Department of Radiation Oncology, in collaboration with the Rackham Graduate School and Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences. Trainees will complete didactic courses and have the opportunity to shadow qualified medical physicists to gain clinical experiences at the University Hospital (main campus) and our hospital affiliates. Our program is currently in preparation for accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP).

What is Medical Physics?
Didactic Requirements

Didactic Requirements

Current US standards of professional practice require medical physicists to complete structured clinical training and either have graduated from accredited graduate programs or obtain a certificate approved by CAMPEP. Our program complies with CAMPEP education standards, and fully prepares trainees to compete for residency positions. Trainees are expected to complete the following six core courses with a total of 19 credits. Students who have completed some of these courses as part of previous graduate study will be required to take any remaining CAMPEP-required core courses.

  • Radiological Physics and Dosimetry (2 credits)
  • Radiation Therapy Physics (3 credits)
  • Medical Radiological Health Engineering (3 credits)
  • Radiation Biology (3 credits)
  • Physics of Medical Imaging (3 credits)
  • Anatomy (5 credits)
Eligibility

Eligibility

This certificate program is open to students with a PhD in physics, engineering or a science field related to medical physics. As CAMPEP requires a doctorate (for students that do not have a CAMPEP-approved medical physics masters degree) to enter a residency program for clinical training, official enrollment into this certificate will only be granted after the doctoral degree is earned.
