These notes are for Thomas Schooley and several other Quaker Schooleys from the Derbyshire-Yorkshire border area who might be relatives or siblings of Thomas Schooley. Thomas married Sarah Parker and died about 1724 in New Jersey. Researcher James B. Schooley speculated that several of these people were sibling children of Robert Schooley [1].
Several of these potential siblings with Quaker records in England: John, Robert (married to Sarah Bingham), Thomas, and William Schooley, were early settlers in Burlington County, New Jersey. Another potential relative, Mary Schooley, was named as a daughter of Robert Schooley [2] and sister of Robert Schooley Jr on Mary Schooley's marriage record in New Jersey [3].
The only document that we have found about the geographic origin of the New Jersey Schooley families is a New Jersey deed dated 1687, which named John Schooley as being late of Aughton in the parish of Aston, Yorkshire, England. We have not yet found any Quaker records for John Schooley of Aughton, England. We have found Quaker records near Aughton for Robert, Thomas, William, Martha, Robert, and Sarah Scholey. All of these names appeared in Quaker records in England, and they jointly witnessed weddings of themselves and of others, in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Yorkshire, near the area of Aughton in Aston parish. There were records for William, Martha, Robert (married to Alice), and Sarah, in England after 1680, after the New Jersey Schooley immigrants had arrived in America. The emigrants Robert (married to Sarah Bingham) and Thomas Schooley first appeared in New Jersey records in 1677-78. There are Quaker records in England for more than one Robert Scholey, so it is unlikely that all of these people are siblings.
Wikipedia indicates that Aston, South Yorkshire "joined local villages Aughton and Swallownest, to form the Aston cum Aughton civil parish" in the metropolitan borough of Rotherham. [4] Genuki indicates that "Aughton, in the township of Aston with Aughton, and parish of Aston, Upper division of Strafforth and Tickhill; 4 miles S. of Rotherham, 9½ from Worksop, (Notts.) 18 from Mansfield, (Notts.) Pop. included in Aston." A map of the parishes of the West Riding, Yorkshire indicates that Aston parish consisted of two areas, one of which was adjacent to Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. [5]
Alva Schooley Lutz contributed the following summary which, like other secondary sources cited here, contains a substantial amount of supposition. [7]
English Landlords: The Scholeys lived in Housewirth parish. They were an old landed family at the time of the Visitations by the Royal Visiting Commissioner on Heraldic Arms, which in 1582 "confirmed" the armorial inscriptions of the Scholeys.
English Scholeys: From this ancestrial home four children of John Scholey (Schooley) left for a pioneer home in America. They were adherents of the preachings of George Fox who founded the Society of Friends, commonly called "Quakers". They purchased lands in America before leaving England to establish themselves in their pioneer homestead. Thomas Scholey with about 151 others signed a petition to King Charles II, dated 3rd of March 1676, (Vol. 1 Archives of New Jersey) for "Concessions" of land in New Jersey. These four emigrants, first of that name known to have settled in America, were Thomas, John Jr., Mary and Sarah. Thomas Scholey, John Scholey Jr., Mary Scholey and Sarah Scholey (brothers and sisters) sailed from the port of Hull on the River Humber in the early part of the summer of 1677 on the "Flie-boat" Martha, says Barclay White (New Jersey Historical Society 2nd series, pages [24]7, [24]8, [24]9); on the "Willing Mind" says the historian Chambers in his "Early Germans of New Jersey" page 480, published 1893.
Scholeys in New Jersey: The destination of these Scholeys was the land obtained by the royal "concessions" on the Delaware [River] in West New Jersey. They arrived at Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey, in November 1677. The next others of the same family or related family arrived at the same place from Hull on the "Shield".
Thomas was the eldest of the four emigrants and is described as among the "Master of Families", though [he was] an unmarried man. Thomas married Sarah Parker in 1686, John Jr. married Rebea Bennett in 1697. Both Thomas and John Jr. founded large families. Sarah married Caleb Wheatley in 1696, Mary married John Rogers in 1680. Schooley Quaker records in England, perhaps of the New Jersey Schooley settlers and their siblings:
1659 Robert Scholey was among 31 Quakers who were sent to prison because they were having a Meeting at Dronfield, Derbyshire, England. Dated June 20. Thomas Foulk, another New Jersey immigrant was also named. [8]
1662 An indenture [possibly a lease] was made 14 Oct. 1662 in which William Spencer demised to William Scoley 4 messuages, 400 acres of land, 200 acres of meadow, 400 acres of pasture and a fulling mill with appurtenances in Elkesley and West Drayton, Nottinghamshire, for a term of 7 years. [9]
1672-73 David Hey reported that there were 5 Scholey families in Aston, Yorkshire, listed in Hearth Tax returns for 1672. [10] [11]
Scholey is a minor place-name, derived from Old Scandanavian skali and Old English leah, and referring to a small settlement in a clearing in the parish of Hemsworth, where Osbert de Scoley was recorded in 1244 and Adam de Scoley in 1313. Three families with this surname were taxed in Hemsworth in 1379. Three centuries later, the hearth tax returns listed 20 Scholeys in south Yorkshire (13 of them in central and eastern parts, including 5 in Aston and 3 in Amthorpe). Another 15 were living just to the north or north east of Hemsworth in a group of nine neighboring townships in Osgoldcross wapentake, 8 others were taxed in and around Wakefield, north-west of Hemsworth, and single households were found several miles to the north at Cawood and York The distribution of the Scholeys in 1672-73 confirms the earlier evidence that the surname arose from a farmstead in Hemsworth parish.
1673 James Faura [Pharo] of Great Dreaton and Anne Mirfin were married on December 13, at Bawtry (marginal note: Sand meeting), witnessed by Robert Murfin, Katherine Murfin, William Scholey, Robert Scoley, and others [12]. James Pharo and wife Anne Myrfin emigrated to Burlington, New Jersey on the ship Shield in 1677. Their son, Gervis Pharo witnessed the marriage of John Schooley to Rebecca Bennett in New Jersey.
1674 Thomas Scholey, gentleman, age 40, of Wakefield All Saints, West Riding, was a witness at a pension hearing for John Peables of Dewsbury. [13]
1675 Robert Schooley, of Whitwell, Derbyshire, and Sarah Bingham, daughter of Richard Bingham of Mansfield, Woodhouse, were married on April 14, at Skegby meeting (marginal note: west side meeting), Derbyshire, England. Witnessed by Richard Bingham Sr, Richard Bingham Jr, Samuel Bingham, William Scholey, Thomas Schooley and others. [14]
1675 Robert Scoley, clothier, and wife Sarah were charged with not attending church and lay non-conformity for the last three months, Quakers, at Warsop. Date: October 22, 1675. [15]

1678 Robert and Sarah Schooley were parents of a child baptized in New Jersey.

1679 "Alice Scholey, daughter of Robert & Mary Schooley, of Mansfield Woodhouse in the county of Nottingham [England], was born the 16th day of the 2d month 1678." Dated April 16, 1678/79. (west side forrest meeting) [20] This Robert married to Mary Schooley in 1679 must be different from Robert Scholey married to Sarah Bingham, since Robert and Sarah were married in 1675 and were still married in New Jersey.
1682 John Scholey, age 36, yeoman of Aston with Aughton was a witness to the will of Nicholas Lockey in West Riding, Yorkshire [England]. [21]
1682 William Scoley, weaver of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and Thomas Rausom, weaver, were charged with not attending church at Worksop on November 15, 1682. [22]
1683 William Scoley, weaver of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, was charged with not receiving holy communion at Worksop on 4.5.1683. [23]
1683 "William Scholey of Ratcliffe in ye parish of Worsop & Alice Higgins of Chesterfield in ye county of Darby [England] took each other in Marriage in a publick Meeting of Friends in ye Meetinghouse in Blythe upon ye 17th of ye 7th Month 1683." [24] "1683 William Scholey of Ratcliffe in ye parish of Worsop & Alice Higgins of Chesterfield publickly solemnized their marriage at ye Meeting house at Blithe upon ye 17th of ye 7th Month in ye presence of William Scholey, Alice Scholey, Rob't Scholey and others [25]. 1500-1600 "The parish church of Aston is All Saints at Aston. ... In the old and now closed burial ground of All Saints are the burial vaults of the Scholeys in the years 1500-1600. Inscriptions on the vaults bear the name of 'Scholeys of Smallage House' " [181] Smallage Farm, Fence, also known as Scholey's Copse was the property of the Scholey family for many years. Carolyn Syrin Valentine [185] summarized a substantial amount of useful research about the Schooley family of Yorkshire and named William Scholey of Aston parish and Robert Scholey of Aughton as possible ancestors for the New Jersey Schooley.
Maria M Schooley suggested William Scholey of Aston (died 1641) or Robert Scholey of Aughton (died 1662) as potential ancestors of the New Jersey Schooleys [186].
One account of the family of John Schooley, given in 1886 by Barclay White, reports: "John Schooley, Jr. was the son of John Schooley of Handsworth Parish, County of York, England. By location and purchase he became the owner of 615 acres of land in the township of Springfield, Burlington county, New Jersey." [187] [188]
Several researchers have entertained the possibility that John Schooley and Elizabeth Fletcher were the parents of our Thomas Schooley, husband of Sarah Parker. Our notes for John Schooley and Elizabeth Fletcher [189] suggest that Elizabeth's parents might have been non-conformists. We have not yet found any other evidence linking the New Jersey Schooley immigrants to John Scholey and Elizabeth Fletcher. Several of those researchers also discussed ancestries for John Schooley, married to Elizabeth Fletcher, based on wills of two apparently unrelated men named Richard Scholey. Thomas Henry Silliman [THS] Schooley stated that John was the son of Richard Scholey, of Easton on the Hill, who died in 1638 [190]. May Ivey Schooley also named Richard Schooley, of Easton on the Hill, as the father of John Schooley [191]. George A. Schooley reports the same ancestry, based on the research of May Ivey Schooley. [192] James B Schooley revised the research of THS Schooley and named Robert Schooley as the father of John and Thomas [193], noting that Richard Scholey, of Easton on the Hill, had only one known son named Anthony [194], and suggested both Elizabeth Fletcher and Isabell Hancock as potential wives [195].
