Notes for Henry Cockerham

These notes for Henry Cochran/Cockerham of Rutherford County are part of our research of collateral Cochran lines of Nancy Cochran [1], spouse of Isaiah Pickett (an ancestor of Robert Wolfe). We do not know how, or if, Henry might be related to Nancy Cochran Pickett. These notes are included here to give access and to allow Ancestry.com to identify possible DNA matches with Robert. Several DNA matches with Robert have been found among descendants of daughter Isabella, but these dna matches are more easily explained by another unknown common ancestor in the Staton line. These notes will be moved appropriately if we discover how Henry might be related to Nancy.

Henry Cochran was the father of William Cochran, who died in 1843 in Muscoge/Morgan county, Georgia. William's brothers and sisters were named in several Rutherford County documents, dated 1843, 1844, 1848, 1850, and 1858, regarding the estate of William. An agreement was recorded in Rutherford county, North Carolina in 1858 regarding the estate of William Cockerham which clarifies that William deceased of Georgia was a son of Henry and that the other heirs named in the documents were brothers and sisters of William. The language of the North Carolina estate documents and another deed of Rutherford County recorded in 1858 are consistent with those facts. This is the same William who died in Morgan County, Georgia in 1843 with administrator (in Georgia) Mathew Cockram. [2] Other researchers suggest that William (deceased in Georgia) was born about 1805, son of this Henry. Henry was married in 1805, suggesting that he was born before 1785. He may have been party to a deed date 1796, suggesting that he was born before 1775. He was too old to be a sibling of Nancy Cochran. We currently show Henry as an uncle of Nancy.

1806 Hugh Bird Greenwood sold land to James Cockerham, both of Rutherford county. The 250 acres of land were on Maple Creek of Mountain Creek bounded on Temp Setons(?) old survey where Charles Richardson now lives. Hugh Greenwood had puchased the land from Gen'l James Miller for himself and his sons William and Hugh Bird Greenwood. Witnessed by William and Charles Richardson. [18]

1805-1835 Note that William Richardson was named as bondsman for the marriage of Henry Cockerham and as executor for the estate of William Cochran, deceased, of Georgia in 1848 documents. Were they the same William Richardson, or was this a coincidence? Was William Richardson a brother of Mary Polly Richardson? William Richardson, son of Charles Richardson, bought and sold land adjacent to Henry Cockrum during this period. Two of the transactions involved Henry McKinney [could this be a relative of James McKinney, son-in-law of Micajah Pickett and Susanna Johns?] and John Covington.

Research Notes:

Was Henry's wife named Mary Margaret (Polly) Richardson? That would explain the name of wife Mary in the 1850 census. Daughter Mary M married Scoggins. Perhaps she was named for mother Mary Margaret.

Both Murray county and Muscogee county in Georgia were named in the documents recorded in Rutherford county, North Carolina. We have found no Cochran probate listings in Muscogee County, Georgia for 1838-1875. [101] [102] We have found no Cochran probate listings in Murray County, Georgia for 1840-72. [103]

Perhaps Henry was a son of Philip Cockerham [104]

1781 Obedience Cockerham (Philip's daughter) and Anthony Juanell were married on January 17, in Halifax County (formed from part of Lunenburg County in 1752), Virginia, by Rev. Thomas Dobson. [105] [106] Note that Philip Cochran (perhaps a son of this Philip) sold land to Anthony Junel in 1799 in Rutherford County.

1799 Philip Cockerham (perhaps a son of Philip) sold land to Anthony Junel on October 28, (recorded June 14, 1801). The land was in Rutherford County, North Carolina, on a branch of white oak [creek] joining his [son Philip Cockerham] other entry including minor? cochrams improvement ... The tract contained 50 acres bearing patent date July 30, 1779. Witnessed by Joshua Linsey, Dysy Cockerham, and Carlton Linsey. [107] This suggests that sons Philip and Minor and duaghter Obedience had moved to Rutherford County. White Oak Creek meanders beside US Route 74 in Polk County, North Carolina joining the Green River south of the overpass of 74 over Green River.

1800 Anthony Junior lived in Morgan Twp, Rutherford County, North Carolina in a household with males: 1 (under 10), 2 (10 thru 15), and 1 (26 thru 44); and females: 5 (under 10) and 1 (26 thru 44). [108]

1806 Henry Cockerham lived on Maple Creek, about 15 miles north of white oak creek.

Perhaps Henry's brother Mathew lived in Morgan County, Georgia and Henry's son William moved to Georgia near Mathew.

This Henry Cockerham was perhaps too young to be the son Henry named in the will of Henry Cockerham Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1754:

1754 Henry Cockerham dated his will on September 19 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Sons William and Henry and daughters Frances and Susan. An inventory was recorded. Witnessed by Moses Cockerham and others. [109]

1763 The inventory for the estate of Henry Cockerham Jr was recorded in Lunenburg county. The estate was settled on June 9. [110]

Several researchers link this Henry Cochran to Stephen George Cochran of Chester County, Pennsylvania.

There was another older William Cockerham perhaps who died in Morgan County, Georgia about 1820. William's son Matthew administered William's estate. Matthew died about 1843. [111]

There was a William Cockran and a John Cockran in Murray County, Georgia at this time.

1839 William Cockran of Murray County, Georgia sold land to John E. Reines. [112]

1843 John Cockran of Abbeville, South Carolina purchased land in Murray County, Georgia. [113]
