Notes for Samuel Hainsey

1884 Samuel Hainsey Trap Door INcident
Altoona Times, Altoona, Pennsylvania, October 7, 1884. [1] [2]

On Sunday morning last Mr. J. H. Stanley and Mr. Samuel Hainsey, who boards with the former gentleman's parents, were engaged in a conversation in the garden attached to the house.

Now, of course, there would be nothing unusual in this if that was all, but it wasn't by a "darned" sight. There is a well in the garden about thirty feet deep, with fifteen feet of water in it, and owing to the drainage from the paper mill the water became impregnated with it, and not being fit for either drinking or culinary purposes the stock was taken out and a trap door put in its place. It was on this trap door that Mr. Hainsey was standing when engaged in the animated conversation but all at once Mr. Hainsey disappeared into the well the door having given away.

As he struck the water he managed to grab onto a stone that projected a little further out than the rest, and held on until Mr. Stanley got a long pole to him with which he assisted him to the top and succeeded in rescuing him from his perlious situation. Mr. Hainsey was not hurt much, one of his legs being slightly bruised, but he did get a complete ducking, but still was very thankful that he got off so fortunately. There are a great many trap doors to be crossed in the course of one's life and Mr.

Hainsey can put this one down in his life's history as a fixed, unbiased fact.
