Several early accounts of the Kunkel family report that Georg Kunkel had sons George and Peter and a grandson Peter (son of George) who was born about 1774 and died about 1830. We show the intervening son as this Johannes (1732-1813). We seek further evidence about the successive generations.

KUNKEL FAMILIES
The Kunkels were among the pioneer families in Albany township, Berks county. The family was founded there by (I) Georg Kunkel (also spelled Kunckell and Kungel), a native of Germany, who located there some time prior to 1754, and it appears that he reared a large family. In Rupp's History of Berks County his name appears on the list of taxables of 1756, as " George Kunckell. " In 1759, according to Montgomery's History of Berks County (1886), his name is listed as George Kungel; in this latter year he paid a tax of £ 6. At the Kunkel homestead is an old grandfather's clock that bears the date of 1772. It was brought into the house at the same time the house was being built, and is the workmanship of George Miller, of Germantown. It has kept good time all these years. On the brass face appear the letters " I. G. K. " Georg Kunkel lived where now resides Nathan Kunkel, near Wessnersville. This tract has been in the family name since about 1754. Georg Kunkel was a farmer, and since his time his farm has been divided and subdivided. His land at one time included all the upper end of Stony Run. He is buried at Wessnersville. His children were: George and Peter.
(II) George Kunkel, son of Georg, had these children: Andreas, Jacob, George Michael, John Adam (born May 8, 1792, died April 11, 1860; m. Magdalena, born Aug. 17, 1792, died May 19, 1844), and Sally (m. John Wagaman).

In the spring of 1825 he moved across the line into Berks county, settling in Albany township, where he owned and operated a grist and saw mill, and followed farming. His mill stood on the Stony Run, and to this day is known as " Kunkel's Mill. " He was succeeded in the ownership of this property by his son, Reuben. A biosketch reports [20]:
DANIEL S. KUNKEL, who is proprietor of a grist and saw mill, and also a cider mill, in Albany township, is a man of great energy and enterprise, and has an established trade which will compare favorably with any similar business in that section of the county. He is a son of Joseph and Catherine (Sneider) Kunkel, and was born in Albany township, September 25, 1832.
His great-grandfather was George Kunkel, a native of Germany, who, upon coming to this country, located in Albany township, Berks County, where he was one of the early pioneer settlers. The county was then in its infancy and was almost a complete wilderness, inhabited mainly by Indians and the wild beasts of the forest. He took up a tract of 300 acres of land, and by untiring industry cleared it and placed it in a state of cultivation. Later he bought more land, and when he died his estate was divided between his two sons, George and Peter, the latter being our subject's grandfather. He was the father of the following children: George, deceased; Peter, deceased; Benjamin, deceased; Samuel; Nathan; Michael; Eliza, deceased; Polly, deceased; and Saloma, deceased, who was the wife of Adam Lynn.
Peter Kunkel was born in Albany township, Berks County, and after his marriage moved to Lynn township, Lehigh County, where he engaged in farming, and operated a distillery on the farm. His wife, whose maiden name was Maria Raush, bore him a large family of children, one of whom was Joseph, the father of our subject.
Joseph Kunkel was born in Lynn township, Lehigh County, but in the spring of 1825, he came to Berks County and settled in Albany township, where he owned and operated a grist and saw mill and followed farming. He was united in marriage with Catherine Sneider, a native of Lynn township, Lehigh County, and they reared twelve children, namely: Peter, deceased; Magdalene, deceased; Nathan, deceased; Joseph, deceased; Daniel S., whose name appears at the head of these lines; Jeremiah, who conducts a hotel in Wessnersville, Pa.; Jacob, deceased; Catherine, deceased; Reuben, a farmer on the old homestead, married Sarah Weida; Sarah, deceased; David, a farmer of Albany township, married Seniah Stump; and Rebecca, deceased, who was the wife of David Heckert, by whom she had one son, Milton. Mr. Kunkel passed to his eternal rest March 10, 1866, and his wife survived him many years, dying May 21, 1885.
Daniel S. Kunkel was reared on the farm, and received his intellectual training in the common schools. He lived on his father's farm until after his marriage, when he settled upon the farm he now owns, and remained there two years. He then moved to Perry township, where he followed farming and worked at the trade of a millwright, but at the expiration of three years he returned to Albany township, and has lived on his present farm since. He carried on general farming and bought and sold stock for some years, but in 1868 he built a saw mill, which he now operates. He also built a feed mill in 1893. which he runs in connection with the other lines of business. He is an honest, straightforward business man, and has made scores of friends by the manner in which he conducts his affairs.
Our subject formed a matrimonial alliance with Catherine Trexler, May 14, 1857, and they are the happy parents of five children: Ellen, who died at an early age; Asaph married Dolly Parker, and they are the parents of two children, Ruth and Kate, who reside in Westfield, Tioga County, Pa.; Jonathan Joseph, who died at an early age; Thomas Daniel, a clerk and bookkeeper in a tannery in Westfield, Tioga County, Pa.; and Wallace Peter, who resides on his father's farm and has an interest in the mills. Mrs. Kunkel was born in Albany township March 3, 1833, and is a daughter of Amos and Elizabeth (Dietrich) Trexler, the former of whom was an agriculturist and a tanner by trade. In In political belief, Mr. Kunkel is a stanch Democrat, and has served as town auditor for some time. Both he and his worthy wife are devout members of the Lutheran Church, of Wessnersville. As a representative and highly popular citizen of the northern section of Berks County, it gives us pleasure to present the portrait of Mr. Kunkel.
