[44] He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Matthew was named in the listing and also on the summary page as a Revolutionary War veteran. The pages are shown in different districts (perhaps in error). Banister Cockrum was listed adjacent. [45]

1840 Mathew Cochran, age 83, lived in District 276 (City district?), Morgan County, Georgia. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. [46] Note that the age agrees with the entry above. The page might be misplaced.

1842 Mathew Cochran, of Morgan County, Georgia, dated his will on July 29. The will left the estate to minor son Mathew and wife Sarah. If neither survive, then the estate was willed to the grandchildren of daughter Susan Ware, of Alabama. John Porter was named guardian of wife and son, who was to receive a good English education. The will was affirmed by witnesses on November 12, 1844. [47] Was this Mathew, son of Philip, or son of William?

1842 James D. Peeples transferred several slaves to Mathew Cochran as trustee for Amanda Peeples, wife of James D. Peeples, by deed in Morgan County, Georgia dated August 18. [48]

1843 Matthew Cochran brought suit of debt against James D. Peeples in the Morgan County Superior Court, September term. [49] James Peeples was charged with assault of Mathew Cochran and was found guilty in March term 1844. The testimony suggested that substantial bodily harm was done. Matthew Cochran was listed as a witness. [50] Note that Matthew made his will and died in 1844, perhaps from injuries sustained from James Peeples.

1844 Amandy Peeples was taxed in Morgan+Early+Cherokee counties on the waters of Sugar River. [51]

1844 Georgia tax for Banister, James, Banister Jr, Thos, Mathew Cockram and Amandy Peeples in Shepherd's District. [52]

1844 Matthew Cochran was seriously injured by James Peeples, perhaps as a result of settling accounts related to William's estate and Amanda Peeples.

1844 Matthew Cochran, trustee for Amanda C.F. Peoples, gave notice in the Southern Miscellany newspaper dated March 22, for the sale in May of Negroes: Alfred (age 25), Rachael (age 22) and daughter, and Caroline (age 16) at the Madison County courthouse. [53]

1844 Matthew Cochran petitioned to sell negroes from the estate of William Cochran on March 6. Legal notice had been given. Such sale was necessary to do a division among the legatees. [54] A notice was published in Southern Miscellany, Volume 2, Madison, Georgia, September 23, 1843, number 26, page 3: "Four months after date of publication will be made … for leave to sell negroes belonging to the estate of William Cochran, deceased. Mathew Cochran administrator."

1844 Matthew Cochran died and his estate was administered by John Robson. Matthew's widow Sarah remarried in 1851.

1844 The last will and testament of Matthew Cochran was recorded in court on November 13. John Robson was named as an executor. [55] The will named wife Sarah and minor son Matthew and children of daughter Susan Ware (now of Alabama). Son Matthew was to inherit the entire estate unless he died during his minority, in which case daughter Susan was to inherit the estate. The will was dated July 29, 1842. John W Porter was named as guardian of son Matthew. John Robson and Benjamin M Peeples were named as administrators. The will was witnessed by friend John R. Robson and others. The probate date was November 13, 1844. [56]

1845 John Robson made a return for the estate of Matthew Cochran. [59]

1846 John Robson petitioned to sell goods from the estate of Matthew Cochran in order to pay debts. [60] John Robson made a return on August 5. [61]

1846-49 The inventories of the estate of Matthew Cochran were recorded. [68] [69] [70] [71] [72]

1851 Sarah W. Cochran, widow of Matthew Cochran, had remarried with James Rowland. James Rowland petitioned the Morgan County Superior Court March term for a partition of the estate for her right of dower. Matthew's estate included several contiguous tracts and parcels together with 900 acres in Morgan County adjoining Hudson Wade, George L Bird, and others. Notice was given to John Robson. [73] A survey was made, as reported in the September term, setting off her dowers third with 310 acres. A map is in the court record. The other heirs were not named. [74] [75] [76] [77]

1852-56 There were ongoing disputes between John Robson and other Cockrums, perhaps related to Matthew's estate.

1852 John Robson brought suits in the March term of the Morgan County Superior Court against James Cockrum, John I. Cockrum, Joseph Cockrum, and William Cockrum. [78]

1856 A notice in the Madison Family Visitor dated March 22 reported that property of James Cochran was to be sold to satisfy a debt to John Robson as ordered by the Morgan County court. [79]

Research Notes:

There might be more than one man named Mathew Cockran, whose notes might be difficult to distinguish. Both this Mathew Cochran, son of Philip, and Mathew Cochran, son of William and cousin of this Matthew [80] apparently reportedly lived in Morgan County, Georgia at about the same time. However, we have found no evidence that William had a son Mathew.

This Matthew Cochran, son of Philip, owned land on Sugar Creek, which is mentioned in several deeds and tax records.

A biosketch reports [81]:

Matthew Cockerham, youngest son of Philip Sr. Cockerham b. ca. l760. Served in Va. regt., Rifleman under Capt. White and Col. Montford. Later given a pension while living in Morgan Co., Ga. Pension no. S32l8S in amt. of $20 per yr. for 6 mo service. Served in Va.& N.C., seeing no combat. was 20 mi. from Yorktown when news of Cornwallis' surrender reached his unit. Spelled name Cockrum and Cockram most of his life. was in Mecklenburg Co., Va. alone in l782, but was in Edgefield Co., S.C. in 1790 with a wife and no children. At the same time, his 1st cousin, Matthew Cockrum, son of William Cockerham, was in the same county with a wife and child. Matthew was listed in C1ift's Reconstructed Census of 1800 as a taxpayer of Lincoln County. By 1815 he was in Morgan Co., Ga., where he remained the rest of his life, dying in 1844. On Oct. l7, l815, Matthew married Winney Wall in Morgan Co. It is presumed that his first wife had died. The 1820 census showed Matthew and Winney with a 4 year old daughter, Susan. A second daughter born in 1821 died early. By 1830 Winney had died and Matthew was now living alone with his 14 year old daughter Susan. In 1827 Matthew filed for land in the Georgia land lottery (of vacated Indian lands) and received land in Muscogee Co., Ga. There is no evidence that he ever lived on or worked these lands. In 1836 at age 75 he married his 3d wife, Sarah Bailey (b.1809) in Jasper Co., Ga. He was 49 years her senior. In 1836 when Matthew was 76, Sarah gave birth to Matthew Jr. Matthew died in 1844 at age 84. His inventory of estate was posted in Morgan Co. on Nov. 29, l844. The farm and slaves were to be worked as before and proceeds to be first spent for young Matthew's education, the balance to be split equally between young Matthew and his mother. If she married before young Matthew's maturity, he was to get all save for half of the household goods to Sarah. If young Matthew did not reach maturity, all the estate to go to the children of old Matthew's daughter, Susan Ware (wife of George N. Ware) who lived in Alabama. Ten years later, Matthew's estate, chiefly in land and slaves, was still being administered and yet unsettled. Records in sundry places where Matthew lived were spelled Cockrum, Cockram, Cockran, and Cochran. Nowhere was it spelled Cockerham after he left Virginia. Descendents of Matthew and of his cousin, Banister Cockrum still live in Morgan Co. today and all spell the name Cochran. Matthew was executor of his Uncle Benjamin's will (Banister's father) in 1816. The will was filed in Morgan Co. Matthew owned 28 slaves in 1830 and 40 in 1840.
