A Civil War veteran, he enlisted - overstating his age by five years - in Cumberland County October 13, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg that same day as a private with Co. According to his widow, he was shot in the hip in battle and the ball never removed, but his compiled military service records make no mention of this.
He married Anna/Kate/Catharine and fathered C. H. (b. 10/12/76 or 10/25/72) and Teresa (b. 08/10/80 or 08/19/77 - married Harry Z. Kegeris) - John reported both sets of birth dates for his children.
