Notes for Peter Winebrenner

Research Notes:

There were two cousins named Peter Winebrenner, sons of brothers Christian and George. Both brothers lived in Hanover Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. It is unclear which cousin Peter was which. A history of Hanover borough reports that Peter (saddler) and Henry (wheelwright) Winebrenner were brothers, so they were likely sons of George Winebrenner. See our notes for Peter Winebrenner [1], son of George Winebrenner.

The records for York County, Pennsylvania provide no compelling evidence that there were two men named Peter Winebrenner living there between 1800-1830. There was also a Peter Winebrenner, who fits as a son of this family, who died in 1813 in New Orleans (see the notes below).

Christian Winebrenner (died 1815) had sons Peter, Sebastian, and Christian (died 1832). Christian Winebrenner (died 1832), was named as an heir, apparently surviving, of Christian Winebrenner (died 1815), in the final 1839 account. Similarly, the account names Sebastiana as a heir, but a newspaper announcement dated 1823 named heirs of Sebastian Winebrenner. We suspect that the executor (who succeeded the first executor, who had died) did not know of the deaths of these two sons of Christian Winebrenner (who died in 1815). Peter, son of Christian Winebrenner (died 1815), was also named as an heir, apparently surviving, in the final 1839 account of Christian Winebrenner's estate. Perhaps the family of Christian (died 1815) did not know that son Peter had died in 1813. Lacking any other evidence, we have assumed that Peter Winebrenner, who died in 1837 in York County was a son of George Winebrenner and that Peter Winebrenner, who died in New Orleans in 1813, was a son of Christian (died 1815).

The Winebrenner genealogy discusses children of Christian Winebrenner with this discussion of son Peter [2] [3]:

Peter, about whom we have no information as yet, except from the old letter of May 7, 1900 which says he had a son Joseph to whom his cousin, David S of Philadelphia, gave his land in the West, acquired for services in the War of 1812.

1813 Peter Winebrenner of Pennsylvania, age 47, enlisted for the War of 1812. He served in New Orleans. He was born in Little York, Pennsylvania. He enlisted on October 28\13 (perhaps 28 Oct 1813). He died May 13\14 (perhaps 13 May 1814). [4]

1813 Peter Winebrenner, born in Little York, Pennsylvania, age 47, height 5 feet 5 inches, died in New Orleans on October 23. [5]

Peter Winebrenner [perhaps Peter who died in 1813] and widow Mary had a pension for the War of 1812 with bounty land. [6]
