In the name of God Amen. I John Adam of Washington County and state of Maryland being in perfect health body and of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding and considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say. John Adam. Witnessed by: David Middlekauf, Jacob Binkley, Christian Feightig (in German). Proved January 23, 1808.
1808 Letters of administration were issued to Henry Adam [perhaps a grandson through deceased son John] on January 23. He posted bond with Jacob Zellar and Jacob Binkley of Washington County, Maryland. [82]
1808 An appraisal of the estate of John Adam was made on January 23. The inventory of the estate of John Adam was recorded on April 28. A list of desparate debts due to John Adam named John Leight, Peter Adams, Christian Winebrenner, and Jacob Hagelers. [83]
1808 The Washington County, Maryland Orphans' Court ordered Henry Adam, executor of the estate of John Adam, to sell at public auction the personal estate of John Adams, with notice in the newspapers at Hagerstown of the sale. Dated February 9. The adjacent listing named Jacob Zeller guardian of Dan'l Reuch [Rentch?]. [84]
1808 Henry Adam was ordered by the court, on February 9, to sell items from the estate. [85] He was ordered to give notice in the newspapers of Hagerstown. [86] The estate sale of John Adam was held at Hagerstown on February 25. Peter Adam, Jacob Binkley, Henry Adam, Jacob Zellers, and Christian Winebrenner (all of whom are named elsewhere in these notes), among others, purchased items. [87]
1808 Several items were posted in the Maryland Herald and Elizabeth-Town Weekly Advertiser of Hagerstown, Maryland by Henry Adam regarding his pottery business and the estate of John Adam. [88] Henry Adam, executor of John Adam, is plausibly the same person as Henry Adam, potter, of Hagerstown. That same Henry Adam is plausibly one of the grandsons, son of deceased son John Adam, named in will of John Adam dated 1808:

1809 Henry Adams gave the first account of the estate of John Adams to the Washington County, Maryland Orphans Court. Account dated April 13. The account reported money received of Winebrenner and of Jacob Geller [Zeller?] and reported debts due to several persons. [90]
1809 Henry Adams gave the second account of the estate of John Adams to the Washington County, Maryland Orphans' Court. Account dated September 27. The account reported money received of Jacob Zeller and of Philip Rennon. Balance of £2785.5.7. [91]
1810 Henry Adams made a second account of the estate of John Adams to the Washington County, Maryland Orphans' Court, on October 3. The account reported money received of Jacob Zeller for lands sold and of Philip Rennon. Balance of £2785.5.7. [92]
Several heirs of John Adam released executor Henry Adam from further claims against the estate.
1811 Christian Winebrenner, spouse of John's daughter Mary and heir at law of John Adam, late of Washington County deceased, released executor Henry Adam from further claims from the estate upon payment of £150, a specific legacy, on October 22. [93]
1812 Peter Adam of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, heir of John Adam, late of Washington County deceased, released executor Henry Adam from further claims from the estate upon payment of £1042.19.3 on December 5. [94]
1813 William Adam [son of John?], heir at law of John Adam, late of Washington County deceased, released executor Henry Adam from further claims from the estate upon payment of £106.8.9 on January 23. [95]
1814 Daniel Moon, attorney for Mary Winebrenner [daughter of Christian Winebrenner, why not Mary Rivir?], released executor Henry Adam from further claims from the estate upon payment of £15.4.1 on February 28. [96]
1814 Daniel Moon, spouse of Catherine who was a daughter of Christian Winebrenner, released executor Henry Adam from further claims from the estate upon payment of £15.4.1 on February 8. [97]
1816 Jacob Winebrenner [son of John's daughter Mary], heir at law of John Adam, late of Washington County deceased, released executor Henry Adam from further claims from the estate upon payment of £20.14.7 on November 12. [98]
1812 Son William Adams and his wife Gertrout of Woodbury Twp sold 17 acres of land on Clover Creek in Morrison's Cove, Woodbury Twp, Bedford County to Conrad Nicodemus for ten dollars. The land had been granted to John Adams late of Washington County, Maryland, father of William Adams. The land originally had two warrants, one granted to Jacob Niederer in February 1776 and sold to John Adams on December 22, 1798 and the other warrant dated April 9, 1792 to John Adams. John Adams received a patent for the land on February 8, 1802 [99]. [100]
1810-16 Henry Adam gave an account of the estate of John Adam, dated October 3, in Washington County, Maryland. The account mentioned land sold to Jacob Zeller, with a total estate value of £2785.5.7½. The Will was administered by Henry Adam on October 3, 1810. It was dispersed such: Peter £1250.0.0; deduct advance £310.9.6; Henry, Jacob, John, Christian each £250.0.0; Mary £230.0.0; Christian Winebrenner £150.0.0; John, son of William £40.0.0; balance £425.15.1½ to 4 heirs from the total estate value of £2785.5.7½. [101] [102] The will of John Adam made bequests to several grand children, so the names of children and grand children could be interspersed in this distribution list.
1815 A law was passed in Maryland allowing John Adams of Washington County, Maryland, perhaps this one after his death, or his son, to have land rights, even though he was not naturalized in the United States [103].
Chapter 27. Passed Dec. 30, 1815. Title vested. Proviso Deeds &c. An act for the relief of John Adams, of Washington County Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That, the title to the real property of him, the said John Adams, heretofore intended to be vested in him the said John Adams, his heirs or assigns, by deed purchase or otherwise fairly obtained, be and the same is hereby as amply and fully vested in him the said John Adams and his heirs, to all intents and purposes, as would have been if he had been duly naturalized agreeably to the laws of the United States; Provided, nothing in this act shall in any manner defeat or be construed to defeat any right title or claim to said property, or any part thereof, acquired by any person or persons whatever before the passage of this act. 2. And be it enacted, That all deeds conveyance grants or assurances for passing or transferring any real property made to and by the said John Adams, before he became naturalized agreeably to the laws of the United States, be and the same are hereby made valid and effectual to every intent and purpose whatsoever, and that the title or interest in the said real property intended to be conveyed thereby, shall be as good and available in law as if the said deeds, conveyances grants or assurances had been made and executed since the said John Adams hath become a naturalized citizen agreeably to the laws of the United States.
