Between 1804 and 1819, the year Berrysburg was founded, John A. Heller did extensive buying and selling of land in what was then Upper Paxton Township. Land was easily acquired at this period of history ; however, it took courage, determination, a will to work and faith in humanity to lay out a town as Mr. Heller did. The plan of the town was like that of a typical German Village in which each owner had a small plot of ground sufficient for raising food and keeping livestock. Hence, one could live on a farm in Berrysburg or establish a business or trade to accommodate the residents of the area.
