Notes for William Reed

1775 William Reed mortgaged land from Clarks Inheritance to Thomas Willson on November 25. William Reed had inherited the land from his father William Reed. On 18 October 18, 1779 Thomas Wilson sold 100 acres of Clarks Inheritance back to William Reed. [1] [2]

This Indenture made this twenty fifth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and seventy five Between William Reed of Ann Arundel County Planter of the one part and Thomas Wilson of the same County Merchant of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William Reed for and in consideration of the sum of Sixty two pounds six Shillings and ten Pound Sterling money of Great Britain to him in hand paid by the said Thomas Wilson the receipt whereof the said William Recd doth hereby Acknowledge hath granted bargained sold aliened enfeoffed and confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain sell Alien Enfeof and Confirm unto the said Thomas Wilson his Heirs and assigns for ever all that part of a tract or parcel of Land devised by William Reed deceased to him being all the East part of Dwelling Plantation Beginning at a Maple tree standing within few feet to the eastward of the House spring and running from thence South till it intersects the outline of said Plantation and (?) binding with and on the outlines of said plantation till it Interest the month of said Spring branch thence binding on and with the Run of said Branch up to the first beginning and the Reversion and Reversions remainder and remainders rents Jones Profits Houses buildings Improvements onto and advantages thereof and every part and parcel thereof and all the Estate Right Title Interest Claim and Demand whatsoever of him the said William Reed of in or to the said Premisses and Every part thereof To Have and To Hold the said tract or parcell of Land and Premisses as above described with the appurtenances thereunto belonging unto the said Thomas Willson his Heirs and assigns to the only proper uses and behoof of the said Thomas Willson his Heirs and assigns for Ever Provided always and upon Condition that if the said William Reed his Heirs or assigns do and shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Thomas Willson the full sum of Sixty two pounds six Shillings and ten Penes Sterling money afsd with legal Interest for the same from the date hereof and also all costs and charges which shall arise from the Drawing and recording this Instrument of writing at a before this twenty fifth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand and seven hundred seventy six that then and from thenceforth these presents and every claim herein contained shall cease and be (void?) In witness whereof the said William Reed hath hereunto put his hand and affixed his seal the day and year above written

Ann Arundel County Court. On the 25th day of November 1775 came before me the Subscriber one of the Lord Proprietarys Justices of the Provincial Court the within mentioned William Reed and acknowledged within Instrument of writing to be his act and Deed and the Land and Premisses therein contained to be the Right & Estate of the Said Thomas Willson his heirs and assigns for ever according to the true intent and meaning thereof

1776 William Reed of Anne Arundel county, perhaps this one, was at Valley Forge in Captain Richard Dorsey's artillery company. He was a private in Captain Dorsey's unit on 17 November, 1777. He took the Oath of Allegiance before Richard Harwood on March 1, 1778. [3] [4]

1777 On 24 January, William Reed and others signed a Petition of Capt. Nathaniel Smith's Company, to "Apply for discharge since they received no satisfaction from Capt. Smith; regret lack of pay; rations and other necessaries were promised by the Convention of Maryland; agree to enlist again in another "core" but not under Capt. Smith. [5]

1778 William Reed and others signed the Oath of Fidelity on March 1, in Anne Arundel County to "swear allegiance to the State of Maryland". [6] [7]

1779 Thomas Wilson sold 100 acres of Clarks Inheritance to William Read, both gentlemen of Anne Arundel County, Maryland on October 18. William Reed had previously sold the land to Thomas Wilson on November 25, 1775. [8]

1783 Nelson Read appeared on the assessment list for Anne Arundel County, Maryland taxed for Clarks Inheritance, pt, 100 acres. Anne Arundel Road River Hundred. William Read (perhaps this William, son of John) was also taxed for Clarks Inheritance, 80 acres. James Sanders was taxed for Clarks Inheritance, pt, 103 acres. [9]

1783 The will of William Reed of Ann Arundel County, Province of Maryland was recorded. The will was dated on February 20. The will was disputed by son John in Orphans Court. The will named widow Eleanor and daughter Priscilla and "all my children". [10]

In the Name of God Amen I William Reed of Ann Arundel County in the Province of Maryland being of Sound Mind & Memory & Understanding in Manner and form following viz First and principally I Commit my Soul into the hand of my Blessed Maker trusting in his mercies and in the Merits of my Dear Redeemer for the permission of all my Sins My Body I Commit to the Earth to be therein decenty Intered at the descretion of my Executors hereafter Named -

I Give & bequeath unto my Loving Wife Elener Reed My Dweling Plantation During her Natural life and after her decease I give & bequeath unto My Loving Son Thomas Nelson Reed My Dweling Plantation (it being part of Clarks Inheritance for Ever -

I also Give and bequeath unto my Loving Son John Reed One Cow & Calf one Ewe & Lam & two Puter Plates - I all So give and bequeath unto my loving Son William Reed One Cow & Calf one Ewe & Lam & two Puter Plates - I also Give & bequeath unto My Loving Daughter Prissilla Reed One Cow & Calf one Ewe and Lam & two Puter Plates - I give & bequeath all the Residue of My Personal Estate after my Just Debts are paid to be Equally divided among the Rest of my Loving Children - -

I Do hereby Nominate and appoint my Loving Wife Elener Reed Exetrix of this my Last Will and Testament hereby acknowledged In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and seal this twentyeth day of Febr . One thousand Seven hundred & Eighty three -

Except of sound mind

Son John petitioned the Orphans Court with the allegation that William was insane when the will was written and that Eleanor [step-mother of John] was a designing woman and that the witnessses did not state that William was of sound mind. Subsequent testimony by the witnesses suggested that William was not of sound mind. [11]

Research Notes:

The children listed here were named as children of William Reed from the records of All Hollow's Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Perhaps they were children of this William by his first wife. None of the children naamed in the will or the orphans court petition (John, William, and Priscilla) are named in the list below.

1773 Mary Reed, daughter of Wm. Reed, was born on January 28 [perhaps 1774, if the date was recorded with February as the last month of the year] in Westminster Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [18] [19]

1776 Elenor Reed, daughter of Wm. Reed, was born on August 18 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [20] [21]

1776 Isabell Reed, daughter of Wm. Reed, was born on August 18 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [22] [23]

1778 Rachel Reed, daughter of Wm. Reed, was born on August 21 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [24] [25]
