Cousin Judith remembers [1]:

Arthur Schafer was known as Eugene or Gene. Judith and her family visited the family of Eugene in 1925 in Jewell, Kansas, when Judith was 9 years old. She remembers that Eugene was very handsome.

Edwin Schafer wrote on January 19, 1964, to his daughter Judith that Gene had a coronary on October 20, had been in the hospital for 46 days, was improving steadily, and hoped to return to work in a limited way in a few weeks. He mentioned that Gene's son Mike was a student in the University of Kansas Medical School, that Gene's daughter Lucia was a senior at K.S.U. in foreign languages, and that Gene's mother Gwen was in a home for seniors in Norton, Kansas.

1993 A. E. “Gene” Schafer died on April 12 and was buried in Norton Cemetery, Norton, Norton County, Kansas. His monument inscription states that he was born on December 1, 1912. [2] His Social Security record states that he died on April 13, 1993, that his last residence was Norton, Norton County, Kansas, and that he was born on December 1, 1912. Arthur Eugene Schafer
NORTON - Arthur Eugene "Gene" Schafer, 80, Norton, died Monday, April 12, 1993, at the Norton County Hospital, Norton. Mr. Schafer was born Dec. 1, 1912, near Jewell and had been a Norton resident since 1946. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He moved to Norton in 1937 and was the county agricultural extension agent, and in 1944 he went to work for Reich Grain Co., where he became part owner, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where he was a eucharistic minister, and a member of the Council 1510 Knights of Columbus and Fourth Degree member of Frank Moeder Assembly 0303 of Oberlin. He was a life member of Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post 63, Norton; was past commander 6th District American Legion Department of Kansas and was a Voyager of Voiture 855 of 40 & 8. He was a 50-year member of United Commercial Travelers Council 133 and the Norton Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Norton Grade School Board for 14 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marceline of the home; a son, Dr. Michael E. of Evanston, Ill.; three daughters, Lucia A. Lindh of Manchester, Mo., Mary Jeannette "Bunny" Broeckelman of Wichita and Jill K. Werner of San Francisco; a brother, Dr. Lewis A. of Lincoln, Neb.; and 11 grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton, the Rev. Mark Berland officiating. Burial will be in Norton Cemetery with military rites by Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post 63. A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the church. Visitation will be from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Enfield Funeral Home, 215 W. Main, Norton, 67654, and from 9 a.m. to service time Thursday..

1997 Marceline Schafer died on December 29. Her Social Security record states that her last residence was Norton, Norton County, Kansas and that she was born on August 21, 1914. [5] She was buried with her husband in Norton Cemetery, Norton, Norton County, Kansas. [6] An obituary states, [7]

Mary Marceline Schafer
NORTON - Mary Marceline Schafer, 83, Norton, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at her daughter's home in Bellevue, Neb. Mrs. Schafer was born Mary Marceline Gallagher on Aug. 21, 1914, at Jewell.

She was a former postmistress of the Jewell County post office and served on the Andbe Home board of directors. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Norton, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Nira Embroidery Club and several bridge groups. She was a former president of the local chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary and was active in the national auxiliary. Her husband, Gene, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Michael; three daughters, Lucia A. Lindh of Manchester, Mo., Mary J. "Bunny" Brockelman of Wichita and Jill K. Werner of Bellevue; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton, the Rev. John Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Norton Cemetery.

A wake will be at 7 p.m. today at Enfield Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Visitation will be today at the funeral home, 215 W. Main, Norton 67654.
