Notes for John Rivir and Mary Winebrenner

1780 John Rivir was born on May 12, in Pennsylvania. [1] In the 1880 census, John Rivir's birthplace was reported in the listings for two sons: the listing for son Christian reports the birthplace as Pennsylvania while the listing for son John Jr reports the birthplace as Maryland. Both listed their mother's (Mary) birthplace as Pennsylvania.

"Grandfather Rivir was Born in the state of Pennsylvania May the 12th 1780.
His Given name Being John
And was buried on Bass Island in the state of Ohio
Having Died in the was of 1812."

1807-1808 John Ribor was a miller in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County as a young man. Perhaps he worked at the mill described below. Christian Winebrenner, father of Mary Winebrenner, also lived in Woodberry township from 1891 until his death in 1833.

1807 John Ribor was taxed as a Single Freeman in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was a miller by occupation. He was not found in the previous two years (1806, 1804). [Photocopy, 1807 tax record of freeman John Ribor, miller, of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.] Another listing reported his name as John River, miller. [2]

1808 John Ribor, miller, was taxed as a Single Freeman in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [3] Another listing reported his name as John River. [4]

1810 John Ribor was listed as a Single Freeman in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, but the name was crossed out with the notation "he is married". Five other men had similar notations on the same page of the tax listing. [6]

1811 John Rivor was taxed (not as a single man) in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania with 10 cent tax paid on 1 horse and 1 cattle valued at $20. [Photocopy, 1811 tax record abstract for John Rivor of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.] Another listing reported his name as John River. [7]

1812 John Rivor was not named on the tax list in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [8]

1813 John Rivir served in the War of 1812 under Colonel Rees Hill, 147th Pennsylvania Militia Regiment. Several historical accounts relate to the regiment that John Rivir was in and to its role in the decisive battle on Lake Erie.

1813 John Rivir died on October 18, while in service in the War of 1812, as reported in the family bible of grandson Christian S Rivir and the roster of the Pennsylvania militia [13] [14]:

Grandfather Rivir was Born in the State of Pennsylvania, May the 12th 1780 his given name being John and was buried on Bass Island in the state of Ohio having died in the War of 1812. [15] [Photocopy, Bible of grand son Christian S Rivir with report of John Rivir's death (bottom of the page in gray script).]

"River, John, died on the 18th Oct[ober]", from a list of volunteers in the war of 1812 for the Pay-roll of Capt. Isaac Linn's company, belonging to a regiment of Pennsylvania militia commanded by Col. Reis (or Rees) Hill, commencing 18th May, 1813, and ending the 5th November. John River, in the Company of Hill's Regiment Pennsylvania Militia was a private, and was discharged as a private. [16] [17]

1818 Christian Winebrenner sold 373 acres of land, called Woodsock Bower, to Conrad Martin on January 16, for $1100. Christian was siezed of the life estate to the land from the estate of John Adams, as husband to Mary, daughter of John Adams. [18]

1820 Mary River lived in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County with 1 male (age 1 to 10) and 3 females (under age 10) and one female (age 26 to 45) [19] [20]. Peter Winebrenner lived next door and Christian Winebrenner was listed nearby. Where was son John Rivir, age 11?

Widow Mary Rivir drew lot 4 of 7 of the divided land called "Woodsock Bower", Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, from her grand-father's estate. Mary Rivir was one of seven heirs of land left by her grandfather, John Adams, to the descendants of her deceased mother, Mary Adams Winebrenner. This event was described in deed M-680, dated February 7, 1821.

1821 Conrad Martin sold lot 4, for $136, back to Mary Reivir, which Christian Winebrenner had sold to him in 1818. Dated February 7. [21]

1821 Conrad Martin sold lot 3 back to David Winebrenner, which Christian Winebrenner had sold to Conrad Martin in 1818. Dated February 7. [22]

1821 David Cowen, guardian of David Winebrenner, a minor heir of Mary Winebrenner; and Mary Ryver, wife of John Ryver, and heir of Mary Winebrenner and grand-daughter of John Adam; sold a tract of land called Woodstock to Henry Bridenthall, of Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Dated March 10. The land was 2/7 part of land patented by John Adam on February 4, 1802. Witnessed by David Paderbaugh and Andrew Adam. (Pennsylvania Patent 47-118). [23]

1822 There is no listing for Rivir on the 1822 tax list for Woodberry Twp, Bedford County. [24]

There are several sources that give evidence about the descendants of Mary Winebrenner Rivir through a second marriage to Jacob Hay. Some of the evidence is ambiguous or may be incorrect.

1829 The will of Christian Winebrenner, father of Mary, named his four oldest sons and mentioned three oldest daughters, but did not name the daughters. [25] The seven oldest children [by wife Mary Adam] inherited land from their grandfather, John Adam. The estate was partitioned, as recorded by several deeds [26] [27] [28].

1874 Mary Rivir remarried to Jacob Hay as reported in 1874 Orphans court records for the estate settlement of Mary's childless brother Christian Winebrenner. The court records summarize the attempt to identlfy Mary's heirs and are likely based on whatever evidence the court found at that time.

1874 Mary's brother Peter Winebrenner made notes that recount the known married names of two sisters of Mary. The Mary Hay named in Peter's notes likely refers to Mary Winebrenner/Rivir/Hay. Perhaps Peter Winebrenner attended the orphans court proceedings or made notes from the court record.

1939 The death certificate of Andrew Hay names Andrew's mother as Mary Winebrenner and his father as David Hay. This is perhaps an error made by the informant, naming Andrew's grandmother and an unknown David Hay instead of the correct parents.

Several descendants of Mary Hay have DNA matches with Robert Wolfe and his siblings, suggesting that Mary Hay was Robert's ancestor.

Mary Hay has been named by other researchers as a daughter of Christian Winebrenner and Mary Adam. [29]

1829 Jacob and Simon Hay and heirs of Michael Hay were named on the Woodberry tax list. [30]

1830 We suspect that widow Mary Winebrenner Rivir had remarried to Hay by this time. Jacob Hay (age 40-49) and female (age 30-39) lived in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County in a household with 4 males and 2 females under age 10, listed adjacent to Daniel Cowen. [31]

1830 Jacob Hay and Simon Hay were taxed in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [32]

1831 Jacob Hay was named on the Woodberry tax list. [33]

1831 Jacob Hay and Simon Hay were taxed in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [34]

1837-38 Jacob Hay was taxed (no amount was shown) in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [35] [36]

1840 Jacob Hay lived in North Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), 1 (15 thru 19), and 1 (50 thru 59); and females: 2 (under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), 2 (15 thru 19), and 1 (50 thru 59). [37] John Winebrenner (age 30-40)[perhaps Mary's half-brother] was listed on the same page of the census. Mary's son, John Rivir, lived near a George Albright [see 1830 census] and father-in-law Christian Stoner (age 50-60) in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

1840 Simon Hay, but not Jacob Hay, was taxed in North Woodbury Twp. [38]

1850 Jacob Hay (age 60) lived in Baugo Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana, in a household with Mrs. Hay (age 60). [39] [40]

1851-53 Jacob Hay, Mary Hay (wife of Jacob) and Susan Hay (daughter of J & M) were buried in Oakland Avenue cemetery, Concord Twp., Elkhart County, Indiana. The bodies were moved to other cemeteries when the cemetery was destroyed about 1921. [41]

1851 Susan, dau. of J. & M., died December 21 at age 13y.
1852 Mary, w. of Jacob, died August 15 at age 62y.
1853 Jacob Hay died March 1 at age 64y.

1874 "Rev. Peter Winebrenner went from Indiana to Bedford Pennsylvania to be present at the settlement of the estate, and his notes gave the names of the three daughters as Mary Hay, Catherine Mohn, and Ester Allenbaugh." [This was the estate of Mary's brother Christian Winebrenner.] [42]

1874 The children of Mary Winebrenner with John Rivir and Jacob Hay were clarified by the estate settlement of her brother Christian Winebrenner, who died childless. Bedford County Orphans Court records dated September 15 report the following [43]:

The brothers and sisters of decedent were as follows viz 1 Peter, 2 David, 3 Jacob, 4 Mary twice married first to _ Raver now dead and next to Jacob Hay, 5 Catharine intermarried with Daniel Moan, 6 Esther intermarried with Andrew Allenbaugh. These are all dead leaving issue …

1837 Daniel Hay, of Elkhart County, Indiana, received a patent for 80 acres of land in section 8, Twp 37N, Elkhart County, Indiana. [46]

1849 David and Catherine Hay of Middle Woodbury, Pennsylvania sold land in Elkhart County to Andrew Hay of Elkhart County, Indiana. [47]

1906 Andrew Hay, married, son of David (perhaps an error, should be Jacob) Hay and Mary Wynebinner, spouse of Sarah Ana Hay, died on September 29, 1906, at age 79y 18m 12d, in Elkhart Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana. Andrew Hay was born on December 18, 1829, in Penn. [48] [49]

Research Notes:

1810 John Rivir is not listed on the publicly available images of the Woodberry Twp, Bedford County census [50] [51] However, a few names at the top and bottom of each page are obscured and the families numbered 135-216 are missing, and he might have been listed among the missing names.

1830 We have not found a listing for Rivir in the census for Bedford County, but the neighbors of Mary Rivir from 1820 were found in the Woodbury Twp census as follows: Joseph Daugherty (page 41), Christian Winebrenner (page 23), Henry Kayfer, George Albright, and Abraham Bulger (page 39), William Stull (page 29), Edward Cowan (page 17), Jacob Pote (page 19), Peter Marker (p 41), Adam Walter (p 23), Andrew Baker (p 19), Henry Grubb (p 7), and Abraham Ebersoll (p 27). [US census, 1830]

We show Catherine and Esther Rivir as daughters of Mary Winebrenner and John Rivir, based on DNA matches with descendants. They fit with ages reported in the 1820 census record for Mary Rivir and also correspond to the names of the daughters of Mary (Winebrenner) Rivir.

We show Mary Hay as a daughter of Mary Winebrenner-Rivir and Jacob Hay, based upon DNA matches to descendants of Mary Hay and Joseph Ritts. We show Andrew Hay as their son based on his death certificate and a biosketch, which name his parents. Note that both Mary Hay and Andrew Hay lived in Concord Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana at times between 1850-1860. This agrees with the 1874 Bedford County Orphans Court records cited above.

The ages of children in the 1840 and 1850 census records for Jacob Hay are not consistent. Perhaps Mary Winebrenner-Rivir and Jacob Hay had other children in their household in 1840.

We seek the parents of John Rivir, spouse of Mary Winebrenner. The notes cited below for Frederick Raver of Fairfield County, Ohio and for John Rivir and Catherine Rudisill of Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania and for Leonard Reber and Anna Klein of Berks County and others summarize part of this research.

We have notes about Frederick Raver of Fairfield County, Ohio and his descendants. [52]

Frederick Raver was in the right places at the right times to have been the father of John Rivir. John Rivir's birthdate, as recorded in a family bible, is consistent with the age of the eldest son of Frederick Rivir listed in the 1800 census. Frederick Raver was taxed in 1805 in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County and the records for John Rivir in Woodberry Twp from 1807-1812, when John Rivir and Mary Winebrenner lived there showed that they were living close to each other at about the same time. John died in the War of 1812 before Frederick moved to Ohio. Otherwise John might have followed the rest of the Raver family to Ohio. Mary had Winebrenner relatives in Bedford County and had inherited property in Bedford County from her father, so she may have had little incentive to move to Ohio with the family of Frederick Raver. There is a gap in ages of the children of Frederick Raver, suggesting that he may have had children by two wives.

However, we have found no DNA matches with descendants of Frederick Raver that match with the many DNA matches we have found among descendants of John Rivir. We have looked among all DNA matches with Robert's siblings whose genealogy trees list the name Raver and we have looked among DNA matches that Ancestry.com has suggested as descendants of the Raver family that we show in this database. Currently, we think it unlikely that none of the descendants of the nine known descendants of Frederick Raver would match with any of the cousin descendants that we have found of John Rivir, if John were indeed a son of Frederick.

We have notes about John Reber and Catherine Rudisill of Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. Some researchers have reported that John Reber had a son John. We seek evidence about such a son and his birthdate. [53]

1775 John Reber sold water rights, for land in Codorus Twp, York County, to John Myer Sr. [54]

1776 Jonas Reber, son of Johannes Reber and Catherine Rudisill, was born on August 20. He was baptized on October 14 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, York, York County. [55] [56]

1779 Adam Hoffman, of Heidelberg Twp, Lancaster County, purchased water rights from Henry Bucher for 6 pounds. Dated February 2. [57] The rights had been granted by John Reber to John Meyer, then to Henry Hershey, then to Henry Bucher. This was likely related to the land patented by Adam Hoffman in 1789, which was adjacent to John Revers and John Moyer. [58] [59] [60] [61] [62] [63]

1786 John Reber was listed on the septennial census in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [64]

1787 The will of Jacob Rudisill named daughter Catharine married to John Reber. [65]

1790 John Reebor lived in Codorus Twp, York County with 5 females, 2 males age 16+ and 5 males age less than 16. [66]

1793 John Stoner, great-uncle of daughter-in-law Nancy Stoner-Rivir, warranted two tracts of 50 and 150 acres in Londonderry Twp, Bedford County [later Somerset County], dated August 9. Tracts of 50 and 159 acres were returned on October 30, 1869. The land was granted to Solomon Reiber [perhaps a descendant of Jacob Reiver in the 1800 census below] by land patent. [67] [68] [69] [70]

1793 John Reber was listed on the septennial census in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [71]

1800 John Raber (age 54+) lived in Codorus Twp, York County with one male age 10-15 (perhaps Michael, who achieved age 16 in 1802), one male age 16-25 (perhaps John Rivir), 2 females age 16-25, and female age 45+. [72] Leonard Rever (age 26-44) was also listed.

1800 John Raeber dated his will on April 29 in Codorus Twp, York County. He named wife Catharine, sons Jonas and Henry, daughter Christina, daughter Elizabeth, all the other children, minor children. Lands adjacent to Adam Hoffman. Executors: Ludwick and John Rudisily. Probate May 21?, 1800. [73] [74] John Rivir, husband of Mary Winebrenner, would have been age 20 at the time of probate.

1800 Jonas Reber (entry 160) was listed on the septennial census in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. Leonard Reber was also listed (entry 162). [75]

The York County Orphans Court Records for 1800-1805 do not mention a son John Rivir.

1802 Ludwig and John Rudesill gave the account of the estate of John Reber, showing a balance of £440.18.4 with date March 24. Michael Reber, age 16 and up, chose Jacob Stembach as guardian. [76]

1803 John, son of Jonas and Anna Maria Reber was baptized at Lischy's Reformed Church with sponsors John and Barbara Reber. [77]

1807 Jonas Reber [78] was listed on the septennial census in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. Leonard (entry 167) and Henry (entry 178) Reber were also listed. On the next page was Jacob Reber [79] and Michael Reber [80]

1810 Jonas (age 26-44) [81] and Michael River (age 16-25) [82] and Leonard Reaver lived in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania.

1820 Jonas Rivir lived in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 4 (Under 10), 2 (10 thru 15), 1 (16 thru 18), 1 (16 thru 25), and 1 (26 thru 44); and females: 1 (10 thru 15) and 1 (26 thru 44). [83]

1830 Jonas Revert (age 50-60) lived in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [84]

1845 Jonas Reber died on July 20 and was buried at Old Reformed Graveyard, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania. [85]

We have notes about Leonard Reber and Anna Klein of Berks County. [86]

We have information about John Riveer and Mary Lawson of Lancaster County, Virginia. We have found no DNA matches with descendants of this family. [87]

Jacob or John Raver and son Abraham L Raver

Notes. [88]

1830 Abraham Raver (age 20-29) lived in Miles Twp, Centre County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (10 thru 14) and 1 (20 thru 29); and females: 1 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), and 1 (50 thru 59). [89]

1830 Jacob Raver (age 60-69) lived in Miles Twp, Centre County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (Under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), 2 (10 thru 14), 2 (15 thru 19), 1 (20 thru 29), and 1 (60 thru 69); and females: 1 (Under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), 1 (15 thru 19), 1 (20 thru 29), and 1 (40 thru 49). [90]
