Notes for Thomas Betts and Mercy Whitehead

Mercy Whitehead, daughter of Daniel Whitehead, married Thomas Betts and after his death she married Joseph Sackett. [1] [2]

1693 On May 13, Thomas Betts Sr. of Newtown and Mercy his wife, sold land to Richard Betts. Thomas Betts had recently purchased the land from John Albertus and wife Sarah. [3]

1696 On September 5, Jonathan and Sarah Wright, of Flushing, and George and Elizabeth Wood sold a tract called "the Great Vly" to Thomas Betts, of Newtown. [4]

1698 Thomas Betts was listed as an inhabitant of Newtown, Long Island with a family of 12 persons and 4 negros in a census taken in August. [5]

1709 The will of Thomas Betts of Newtown was dated June 29, 1709 with probate on September 23, 1709. The will named wife Mary and children Mercy Hazard, Abigail Betts, Richard, Thomas, Daniel, Mary, Johannah, Elizabeth, Deborah. Overseers: John Berrien and John Stevenson. [6] [7]

1722 Elizabeth Betts and Robert Comfort were married on October 19. [8] [9] [10]

Notes for son Daniel:

A biosketch reports: Captain Daniel Betts and Sarah Fish were married in February, 1715 in Newtown. L. I. Captain Daniel Betts died on April 12, 1759. [11]

1759 Daniel Betts dated his will of January 2 in Queens. The will named children Daniel, Richard, Samuel, Sarah, Mary wife of William Betts, Mercy wife of Jacob Hallet, Susannah wife of Jacob Hallett Jr, Jemimah wife of Samuel Hallett, and daughter Sarah Betts. The will was proved on April 26, 1760 at the New York Prerogative Court. [12] [13]

1762 Daniel Betts (Jr) dated his will on May 27 in Queens. The will named wife Deborah and brothers and sisters Samuel, Richard, and Mary Betts; Marcy Haliett, Susan Hallett, and Sarah Betts. [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19]

1709 Son Richard Betts and Jemima Field were married on August 19 in USA. [20]

1711 Son Richard Betts and Mary Creed were married in 1711 in Jamaica, Queens County, New York. [21]

1742 Son Richard Betts was buried in 1742 in the parish Churchyard, Jamaica, Long Island, New York. [22]

A biosketch reports: Richard Betts, son of Thomas, was born on July 7, 1685 in Newtown, Queens County, New York. Richard Betts was married to Jemima. They had children named Benjamin, Sarah, William, Richard, Thomas, and Joseph. [23]

Research Notes:

"Thomas Betts, second son of Captain Richard and his wife, Johanna, is described in the ancient deeds as "Gentleman" i. e., entitled to a coat-of-arms, and we know that he used the arms of the Betts of Woodhouse, near Wetherden, county Suffolk, England. He married, 1683, Mercy, daughter of Major Daniel Whitehead, and lived on a portion of the old homestead, serving as a magistrate until his death, in 1709. His widow married, 171 1, Captain Joseph Sackett, whose first wife was Thomas Betts' sister, Elizabeth." [24]

1719 A FindaGrave memorial reports that Mercy Betts Sackett died in 1719 in New York. She was born in 1656 in Jamaica, Queens County, New York. [25]

A biosketch reports [26]:

3. Thomas Betts, son of Richard,^ m. Mercy, dau. of Maj. Dan'l Whitehead, about 1683.* He resided on a portion of the paternal farm at Mespat Kills, and served some years in the magistracy. He d. in 1709, and in 1711 his widow m. Capt. Jos. Sackett. Mr. Betts left nine ch. namely, Richard, Thomas, Daniel, Mercy, m. Thos. Hazard, Abigail, m. Abm. Springsteen, Joanna, Mary, Elizabeth, m. Robert Comfort, and Deborah, who m. Gershom Moore. Thomas, b. Aug. 14, 1689, m. May 5, 1713, Susannah, dau. of Thos. Stevenson. He adopted the principles of the Quakers, as did also his brother Richard, which their descendants have generally adhered to. Thomas had issue Ann, b. Dec. 14, 1714 ; Thomas, b. Nov. 1, 1716, d. young ; John, b. Sep. 15, 1718 ; Stephen, b. Mar. 26, 1720 ; Thomas and Susannah, twins, b. Feb. 18, 1723.
