Obituary for Roberta Good Chaney, 2007

An obituary for Roberta B. Chaney reported [12]:

Roberta B. "Bertie" Chaney, age 81, a 43-year resident of Ashtabula, Ohio, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, with her family by her side at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio.

She was born Sept. 14, 1926 in Greenfield, Indiana, the daughter of the late James B. Good and Laoma Beryl Eastes Good Gemmer. Bertie married her high school sweetheart, Harrold R. "Bus" Chaney in Greenfield, Indiana, on August 1, 1948. The two honored their enduring love by recently celebrating their 59th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Chaney graduated from Greenfield High School in 1944, where she was recognized as a talented vocal soloist. In 1948, she received her B.S. in Education with majors in Music and English from Indiana Central College, now University of Indianapolis. She continued her professional education throughout her teaching career by attending Ball State University, Pestalozzi College, Lake Erie College, Edinboro University and Kent State University. She began her teaching career in Hartford City, Indiana, where she taught elementary education and music in the neighboring one-room school houses. Bertie's passion for primary education took root in Oak Lawn, Ill., where she discovered her talent for bringing theatre and the arts into the classroom.

After moving to Ashtabula in 1964, Mrs. Chaney began a 22-year teaching career at McKinsey Elementary School. She enjoyed writing and directing many cantatas and musicals with her close friends and teaching colleagues. She retired from teaching in 1989 and was a life member of the Retired Teachers' Association of Ohio. She was a dedicated educator inspiring the children in her community for 34 years.

Serving The First United Methodist Church of Ashtabula for 43 years, she was a member of the choir, vocal soloist, leader of the Rebecca Circle, and an active committee member of the United Methodist Women's Society. In retirement, she was an associate member of the First Presbyterian Church, Delray Beach, Fla.

Her faith was instrumental to her being a devoted wife, loving mother and compassionate educator. Whether Bertie was cheering from the sideline or sinking the winning putt, she loved the thrill of sports. As an avid golfer, Mrs. Chaney was a member of the Ashtabula Country Club for 40 years. Throughout her life, she enjoyed international travel. In recent years, she wandered closer to home researching her family genealogy, compiling photographs and documenting the family history for the education and appreciation of her heirs.
