Research Notes:

Alumni Oxoniensis records the matriculation in 1575, B.A. in 1576, and M.A. in 1579 of a John Marks, [14] If John Markes, rector of Gayton, was age 18 in 1575, his age at death would have been about 77, rather than 81 as stated in his burial record. The stated B.A. date in the record is just 3 months after the matriculation date, which suggests that he may actually have begun his studies earlier. There is also a record for a J. Markes who matriculated in a different Oxford college in or before 1572. If these records refer to the same person and John matriculated about 1572 at age 18 and then transferred to a different college at the end of 1575, the date and age discrepancies disappear.

Markes, J. of ORIEL COLL. in or before 1572.
Marks,John, of Devon, pleb. EXETER COLL., matric. entry under date 3 Dec., 1575, aged 18; B.A. 13 March, 1575-6, M.A. 14 March, 1578-9; one of these names rector of Gayton, Northants, 1583 until his death, buried there 17 March, 1633, aged 81; Gayton is however in the gift of Sydney Sussex Coll. Cambridge. See Foster's Index Ecclesiasticus
