Notes for Walter de Beauchamp and Joan de Mortimer

The Oxford DNB states, [1]

[Walter (II) de Beauchamp] was the second son and eventual heir of William (II) de Beauchamp, who was lord of Elmley Castle in Worcestershire, and hereditary castellan of Worcester and sheriff of the county. At William's death in 1197, his heir was his eldest son William, a minor who died before Michaelmas 1211, when Walter was in the custody of Roger Mortimer (d. 1214) and his wife, Isabel. Walter married their daughter Johanna in 1212 (she died in 1225), and was in possession of his barony by 1214 (and possibly in 1213). He obtained his shrievalty on 19 August 1215, but lost it when, with nineteen of his knights, he deserted to the rebels in May 1216. He returned to his allegiance to King John in August 1216, however, when he was reinstated in his lands.

Beauchamp witnessed the reissue of Magna Carta on 11 November 1216, and in March 1217 he was restored to his shrievalty and castellanship, and became keeper of the royal forests in Worcestershire. He also witnessed the further reissue of Magna Carta on 11 February 1225. In 1227 he was appointed an itinerant justice for the Gloucestershire eyre of January to February, and for the Oxfordshire eyre of March to April. But he had withheld the profits of his shire continuously from 1224, and consequently he lost his shrievalty early in 1229, though he was reinstated by 20 November in that year. He continued his family's patronage of the priory of Great Malvern. In 1225 or later, he married his second wife, Angaret, who died between 1280 and 1283.

At the coronation of Queen Eleanor in January 1236 Beauchamp performed the ceremonial duties of the dispensership (an office descended from his eleventh-century forebear Robert Dispenser). He died on 11 April 1236. His first wife, Johanna, was the mother of his heir, William (III) de Beauchamp, who married the eventual heiress of the earls of Warwick, and was grandfather of Guy de Beauchamp, tenth earl of Warwick.
