1684 "Deed between Richard Boughton of Charles County in the Province of Maryland, Gentleman, and William Berry of Rappahannock County, Planter, whereas Francis Doughty, Senior, formerly of Rappahannock River in the Colony of Virginia, Clerk, dec'd, by his deed of grant bearing date 18 March 1668, did for the consideration mentioned grant unto Richard Boughton by the name of Richard Boughton of Charles County, Maryland, and unto his assigns 200 acres on Rappahannock River adjoining the land of Captain Alexander Fleming dec'd. to have and to hold … to the sd. Richard Boughton his heirs and assigns … to the use and behoof of the sd. Ann Doughty my wife during her natural life and in full recompense of her dower and title of dower which the said Ann shall or may have of or to the lands etc. of me the sd. Francis Doughty and after the decease of said Ann to the use and behoof of the sd. Richard Boughton his heirs and assigns forever upon the hope, trust and confidence in him reposed by me the sd Francis. ; further the sd Francis Doughty Senr. did in his life time by certain writing in the presence of Peter Rayner, Robert Payne and Elizabeth his wife for a consideration assign to his son Enoch Doughty by the name of Enoch Doughty my beloved son the reversion of the land and premises mentioned … after the decease of said wife Ann Doughty now deceased, the said Richard Boughton his heirs and assigns should by good assurance of law convey said land and premises to Enoch Doughty, his heirs etc. Now this indenture further witnesseth that the said Richard Boughton for 4500 lbs. tobacco and cask received from William Berry has conveyed the above mentioned 200 acres to him. wit: Lawrence Rockfort, Virlinda Boughton. Recorded November 5, 1684." The deed was dated on November 5. In the same volume, page 245, May 5, 1686, William Berry and wife Margaret sold this land, reciting that it was land purchased in 1662 by Francis Doughty, Margaret's grandfather and by him given to Enoch Doughty her father. The purchaser was Thomas Swinburne, probably some relative of the Nicholas who had witnessed Ann Doughty's will in Charles County. [1].
1686 William Berry and Margaret Doughty were reported married about 1686 [perhaps based on the 1686 deed described above]. [2]
1712 William Berry and wife Margret, one of the daughters and coheirs of Enoch doughty of St Mary's parish, Richmond County, Virginia, sold land to Henery Powell on March 11. [3] Another deed involving the same parties was recorded immediately after this one.
This Indenture made the Seventh day of March in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred Twelve Between William Berry & Margret his wife one of the Daughters & Coheir of Enoch Doughty Deced of the parish of St Maries in the County of Richmond Planter of the one part & Honour Powell of ye Parish of St Annes in the County of Essex Planter of the other part Witnesseth that the said William Berry & Margret his Wife for him for & in consideration of the sum of five Shillings Sterling to them in hand paid by the said Honour Powell at & before the ensealing & Delivery of these presents the Receipt whereof they acknowledge hath bargained Sold & Demised & by these presents doth bargain Sell & Demise unto the said Honour Powell his heirs Exects & admits one Tract or parcel of land Containing Two hundred ninty six acres of Land being part of a patent of four Thousand Seven hundred Sixty three acres of land granted to Enock Douty by patent dated ye 15th day of June 1675 situate lying & being in ye parsh & County aforesd & - Bounded as followeth ( viz ) Begining at a White Oak & a pine nigh the head of a small branch of the Tuck'ho being a Corner of Saml Shorts land and Runing thence South Two hundred thirty Six pole to a Stake in the said Berry back line and running thence East Two degrees & a quarter North one hundred & Sixty poles to two white oaks Standing in a Branch of the Tuckho and Running thence North Two hundred Ninty Six poles to a white oak & running thence West two degrees & a quarter South to the place where it first began together with all houses outhouses Messuages Lands Tenemt & hereditamt & all & Singular the premises with the appurtences & every part & parcel thereof in any wise appertaining and the Revertion & Revertions Remainder & Remainders thereof To have and to hold all singular the Said Tract or parcell of land with the appurte & every part & parcell thereof hereby granted & Sold unto the said Honour Powell his heirs and assigns from the date hereof for & during the full End & Term of one year thence next Ensuing & fully to be Compleated & ended yeilding & paying therefore the Rents of one ear of Indian corn on the fourth(?) of the birth of our Lord Gods next Ensuing of the Same Shall be lawfully Demanded to the intent & purpose that by virtue of these presents & the statute of transfering of uses into possessions and that the said Honour Powell may be in the possession actually of the premises & thereby inabled in Accept of a grant of the reversion & inheritance to him & his heirs heirs for ever In witness whereof the parties first above named interchangably have set their hands & Seals the day & year first above written.
