1906 John William Schafer and Goldie Seaton were married on December 27 in Jewell City, Kansas. [1]
Seaton-Schafer.
A quite en famille wedding was celebrated at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Seaton of this city, last evening, Dee. 27, 1906, at eight o'clock, in the presence of the near relatives. The contracting parties were Miss Goldie M. Seaton, eldest daughter of the host, and Mr. J. W. Schafer, Supt. of schools at Sisseton, South Dakota. The Rev. W. H. Neil performed the beautiful ring ceremony in an impressive manner.
The bride was arrayed in a soft, creamy white robe and carried a bouquet of bride's roses. The groom was dressed in the conventional black.
Immediately before the ceremony, Miss Matah Schaeffer sang a lovely selection accompanied by Miss Gladys Seaton. At the appointed hour the bride and groom entered the room, preceded by Miss Matah Schaeffer and Mr. Roy A. Seaton as brides maid and best man, to the strains of Mendelssohn's inspiring wedding march played by Miss Gladys Seaton. After the ceremony, the company repaired to the supper table, which was literally loaded with a tempting supper, fruits and flowers.
After January 7, 1907, the wedded pair will be at home to their friends at Sisseton, South Dakota.
Both the bride and the groom were born in Jewell county and both have distinguished themselves in intellectual attainments. Miss Seaton was for two years a teacher in our city schools, and she became an authority in every branch she had to teach. Mr. Schafer is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Schafer of Calvin township, and he has all the qualities that count for solid worth. The best wishes of all the Jewell people go with them to their new home.

Robert Schafer, grandson of John William and Goldie, wrote:[12]
The spouse of John William Schafer was Goldie Seaton, born Nov. 26, 1879, in Jewell County, Kansas, and died April 21, 1967, in Center, Colorado. Her husband was born June 5, 1880, in Jewel County and died December 31, 1969. After his wife died, he left Colorado and came back to Topeka to live with my family for a while, and then later moved into the Methodist Home in Topeka, where he was living when he died.
The one story that I remember hearing about my grandfather (John William Schafer) was that he shot the last known grizzly bear in Colorado in the 1920s. The bear apparently had come down from the mountains and was raiding sheep ranches in the San Luis Valley. I believe that at the time my grandfather owned a lumber yard in Del Norte, Colorado, on the western side of the San Luis Valley. He couldn't have lived for long in Colorado at that time, because my father graduated from Eskridge High School in Kansas. I don't now the year of his graduation, but since he was born in 1910, it probably was in 1926 or 1927. He then went to Kansas State, and his parents moved from Eskridge to Del Norte while he was at Kansas State.
Goldie Seaton came from a fairly prominent family; one of her brothers was the dean of engineering at Kansas State University for years and years (the main engineering building, Seaton Hall, is named for him) and another brother was a newspaper publisher. One of her nephews was a U.S. Senator from Nebraska briefly and then secretary of the interior in the Eisenhower administration.
