1930 Elmore (EG) Applegate (age 63) and Arielle Applegate (age 50) lived in Jackson Twp, Darke County, Ohio with children Edward (age 23), Richard (age 21), Lillian (age 19), and Barbara (age 17). [5] [6]
1932 In May, Edward Applegate was married [to Elsie Amspaugh]. [7]
1936 Larry Gordon Applegate, son of Charles Edward Applegate and Elsie Fern Amspaugh, was born on October 1 in Jackson Twp, Randolph County, Indiana. [8]
1939 Elsie's mother died. An obituary in the Union City Times-Gazette, Wednesday, May 3, 1939 reported [9]:
Brown Twp. woman dies. - Amspaugh funeral will be conducted Friday.
Mrs. Susan C. Amspaugh, wife of Daniel F. Amspaugh, well known Brown township, Darke county farmer, died at 9:50 a. m. Tuesday at her home five miles east of Union City following a lingering illness. She would have celebrated her sixty ninth birthday today.
Besides the husband, eight children survive. Two of the children, Daniel, Jr., and Mrs. Gladys Brewer, reside in Greenville. The latter is the wife of Foster Brewer, Darke county treasurer.
The other children are: Dallas Amspaugh, Rossburg rural route; Wilford Amspaugh, Versailles rural route 2; Mrs. Floyd Smiley, and Mrs. Edward Applegate, both of Union City rural route 2; Mrs. Roy Peterson, Greenville rural route 2, and Mrs. Joseph Ruebush, Ansonia.
There also are 15 grandchildren; two brothers, George Zeller, Pitsburg, Ohio, and John Zeller, Rossburg rural route, and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Hand, Bellefontaine; Mrs. Mary Van Scoyk, Greenville rural route and Mrs. Delmonte Bollinger, of Gordon, O.
Mrs. Amspaugh was the daughter of the late Cyrus Keller. She was born in Mississinawa township May 3, 1870 and had been a lifelong resident of Darke county.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. (EST) Friday at the Teegarden church with Rev. Earl Lantz officiating. Burial will be in the Teegarden cemetery.
(Miller Funeral Home records gives her name as Susan Catherine Amspaugh and her husband's name as Daniel Frederick Amspaugh. Her mother was Mary Ann Jenkinson who was born in Darke Co. Her father was born in Germantown, Ohio.)
1940 Edward Applegate (age 33, born in Indiana) and Elsie Applegate (age 39) lived Randolph County, Indiana with children Carrol L (age 6), Richard (age 4), Larry (age 3), and Janet Sue (age 1). They had lived in Darke County, Ohio the previous year. [10]
D. F. AMSPAUGH PASSES AWAY Services Thursday For Ex-Darke County Official Dantel F. Amspaugh, 80, former Darke county commissioner and for many years a leading figure in civic and political affairs, died atl 9:55 p. m. (EST) Monday at his late home, three and one-half miles north of Woodington. His last illness extended over a period of nineteen months, dating back to February, 1939, when ho was injured in a fall in a barn adjoining his home. Mr. Amspaugh, who during his extended career had also served as a trustee in Brown township, was elected as county commissioner in 1908. He was a member of the Teegarden Christian church.
Immediate survivors include three sons. Dallas, of Rossburg; Wilford, of Versailles, and Daniel Jr.. of Greenville; five daughters, Mrs. Floyd Smith and Mrs. Edward Applegate, both of Union City; Mrs. Roy Petersime, of Ansonia route Mrs. Joseph Ruebush, of Ansonia, and Mrs. Foster Brewer, Greenville. There also are 15 grandchildren* one brother, Edward Amspaugh, of Anderson, and three sisters. Mrs. Christena Murray and Mrs. Maggie Moyer, of Union City. and Mrs. Lizzie Clark, of Anderson.
Funeral services will be held at the Teegarden church at 2 p. m. (EST) Thursday with Rev. Earl Lantz officiating. Burial will be in Teegarden cemetery. Friends may call at the Amspaugh residence.
1940 Charles Edward Applegate, age 34, registered for the draft on October 16 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. He was born on August 15, 1906, in Randolph County, Indiana. He had characteristics: Black hair, Gray eyes, and 5' 10" height. [12]
1942 A birthday party was held in Union City. Kathryn Applegate, Elsie Applegate, Lillian Applegate, and children Janet Sue and Donna June Applegate attended.
Mrs. Sylvan Scott and Mrs. Roy Caupp were hostesses recently at the latters' home for a stork shower honoring Mrs. Marie Caupp Frazier. Many lovely and useful gifts were presented to the honored guests. The guests. as they arrived placed their gifts upon a pincloth covered table in the center of which was a white, blue trimmed doll carriage. The doll in the carriage held pink, white and blue streamers which were connected to the gift packages laid about on the table. "Rock-a-bye, Baby" was sung; nursery rhymes were said and Brahms' "Cradle Song" was sung. Mrs. Clara Erbaugh read scripture verses and prayer was repeated. Contests were enjoyed with prizes being won and presented to Mrs. Frazier by Theora Oswalt, Lillie McKibben, May Rhoades and Naomi Livingston. Refreshments of pink and white cake with rosebud and stork decorations were served to Mrs. Kathryn Applegate, Mrs. Elsie Applegate, Mrs. Elsie Oswalt, Mrs. Naomi Livingston, Mrs. Alma Hartman, Mrs. Mabel Rhoades, Mrs. Bernice Pratt, Mrs. Amber Clark, Mrs. May Rhoades, Mrs. Theora Oswalt, Mrs. Lillie McKibben, Mrs. Rozella Paulin, Mrs. Barbara Wright, Miss Lillian Applegate, Mrs. Nadine Yoder, Mrs. Clara Erbaugh, Mrs. Irene Coblentz, Mrs. Pearl Sharp, Mrs. Mildred Rhoades, Mrs. Lillie Swallow, Mrs. Anna Caupp, Mrs. Sylvia Coblentz, Mrs. Gladys Harmeson, Mrs. Grace Scott, Mrs. Edna Caupp, Jimmie and Barbara Caupp and Jackie Oswalt. Other children present were Phyllis Ann Rhoades, Jimmie Harmeson, Janet Sue Applegate, Donna June Applegate, Eldon Oswalt, and Dickie Joe Coblentz. …
Janet Sue Applegate Honored On Tenth Birthday Anniversary Janet. Sue Applegate was complimented with a party Sunday afternoon at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Applegate. The occasion was in observance of her tenth birthday anniversary. The afternoon was spent playing games after which the honored guest unwrapped her gifts.
Refreshments were served from a decorated table centered with a large cake to Janette Mote, Delores Mote, Donna June Applegate, Susan Kay Brewer, Allan Rhugate, Wright, Philip Philip Applegate, Carol Applegate, Larry Applegate and Janet Sue. Elsie Applegate, 87, of 622 E. Main Street, died January 4 at Union City Memorial Hospital. Surviving are three sons, Carol L. of Brookville, Richard G. and Larry G., both of Union City; daughter, Janet Chittick of Long Beach, California; 11 grandchildren; and two brothers, Dallas Amspaugh and Joseph Petersime, both of Greenville. Services were held at the Relchard-Oliver Funeral Home, Union City, Indiana with the burial in the Lisbon Cemetery.
1988 Elsie Fern Applegate, widowed, died on January 4, at age 87, in Union, Randolph County, Indiana. She was born on October 16, 1900, in Union City, 0hio, daughter of Fred Amspaugh and Susan Amspaugh. [20] [21]
