Obituary for Lydia STONER

John Stoner, whose will was dated 1862 in North Woodbury Twp, Blair County was married to Lydia (Brumbaugh). We show him as a son of Abraham Stoner and Anna Kauffman. Several different persons have been conflated with this John Stoner and there is some disagreement about how many distinct people there were and how they were related. Census and tax records for several different men named John Stoner of this place and era might be inter-mixed in the notes below.
The tree at FamilySearch lists three different wives for John Abraham Stoner, son of Abraham Stoner and Anna Kauffman. [1] That tree suggests that John, spouse of Lydia Brumbaugh, and Abraham, spouse of Barbara Rhodes, were the same person. We show John (the subject of these notes and spouse of Lydia Brumbaugh) and Abraham (spouse of Barbara Rhodes) as brothers, both being sons of Abraham Stoner and Anna Kauffman.
John Stoner (the subject of these notes) and his first cousin John (1789-1867) [2], son of John Stoner and Ann Kauffman (who was different from Anna Kauffman, spouse of Abraham), might be difficult to differentiate in some records. Different researchers name one or the other of them as being John Stoner who married Lydia Ann Brumbaugh [3].
The documents in the Research Notes below show that another different man named John Stoner died near Woodbury Twp, Bedford/Blair Counties between 1856-1857. A map dated 1859 shows two different land tracts near North Woodbury Twp labeled "John Stoner". The John Stoner who died in 1856-57 in South Woodbury Twp was likely a son of David Stoner (1794-1856) and Nancy Stoner, which is perhaps an unrelated Stoner line.
John K Stoner died near Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania in 1872 (see the Research Notes below). Despite the middle initial K, his mother was reportedly not a Kauffman.
1812 John Stoner was a veteran of the war of 1812.
1814 John Stoner, farmer, was on the tax list in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [4]
Lydia Ann Brumbaugh, daughter of John Brumbaugh, married John Stoner. Lydia inherited the Brumbaugh homestead near Martinsburg. [5] [6]
1817 There was a listing for John Stoner on the tax list for Woodberry Twp, Bedford County. [7] [8]
There were two listings in the 1820 census for John Stoner in Bedford County:
1820 John Stoner lived in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 2 (under 10), 1 (16 thru 25), and 1 (26 thru 44); and females: 1 (under 10) and 1 (16 thru 25). [9] The adjacent listings were for father Abraham and brothers Abraham, and Jacob.
1820 John Stoner lived in Air Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 5 (under 10), 1 (10 thru 15), 1 (16 thru 25), and 1 (26 thru 44); and females: 1 (under 10) and 1 (26 thru 44). [10] Ann Stoner (45+) was listed adjacent.
1822 John Stoner was on the duplicate tax list for Woodberry Twp, Bedford County. [11]
1830 John Stoner lived in Ayr Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (10 thru 14), 3 (15 thru 19), and 1 (40 thru 49); and females: 2 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), and 1 (40 thru 49). [12]
1834 John Stoner was on the tax list for North Woodberry Twp, Blair County, when it was first founded. [13]
1840 John Stoner lived in Martinsburg Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), 1 (15 thru 19), 2 (20 thru 29), and 1 (50 thru 59); and females: 2 (15 thru 19), 1 (20 thru 29), 1 (50 thru 59), and 1 (80 thru 89). [14]
1846 John Stoner was taxed for 250 acres, 20 acres barren, 122 acres Abraham (perhaps this was a dowry for son Abraham), 5 horses, 3 cows, and 1 carriage in North Woodberry Twp, Pennsylvania.
1850 John Stoner (age 64, born in Pennsylvania) lived in North Woodbury Twp, Blair County, Pennsylvania, in a household with Lydia Stoner (age 51), Barbara Stoner (age 23), Christian Stoner (age 18), David Stoner (age 15), Henry Stoner (age 13), Levi Stoner (age 7), and Lydia Otwine (age 14). [15] The adjacent listing in the census was for John Stoner (age 27), Catherine Stoner (age 21), and David Stoner (age 2), Elsa Miller (age 12) and Eli Stroup (age 30), laborer.
1859 Two residences for John Stoner were shown west of Martinsburg on a map of North Woodberry Twp, Blair County, Pennsylvania. [16]
1860 John Stoner (age 75) and Lydia Stoner (age 61) lived in North Woodbury, Blair County, Pennsylvania with children Barbara (age 29), Christian (age 26), and Levi (age 16) and Nancy Schell (age 14). [17]
1862 John Stoner's will was dated 8 Feb 1862. The will was in probate court in Blair, Pennsylvania, USA, in 16 Jul 1863. The will named Jacob Stoner (Son), Lydia Stoner (Wife), Abraham Stoner (Son), John Stoner (Son), Christian Stoner (Son), David Stoner (Son), Henry Stoner (Son), Levi Stoner (Son), Nancy Stoner (Daughter), Daniel Bowers (Son-in-law), Mary Stoner (Daughter), Joseph Bowers (Son-in-law), Barbara Stoner (Daughter), Elizabeth Stoner (Daughter), and John Kitterman (Son-in-law). 1864 Heirs of John Stoner Sr deceased were named in court proceedings: Widow Lidia Stoner, Abraham Stoner of Stark County Ohio, Nancy Bowers spouse of Daniel Bowers of Ogle County Illinois, Jacob who is in the army, Mary spouse of Joseph Bowers of Canton Stark County Ohio, John Stoner of Martinsville Blair County exc, Barbara Stoner of Martinsville Blair County, Elizabeth spouse of John Ketterman of Carroll county Illinois, Christian B. Stoner of Martinsburg, David Stoner of Stark Ohio, Levi Stoner of Stark Ohio, Henry Stoner of Martinsburg. [19]
1870 Lydia Stoner (age 70, born in Pennsylvania) lived in North Woodbury Twp, Blair County, Pennsylvania, in a household with Barbara Stoner (31).
1880 Lydia Stoner died. [20]
FUNERAL OF MRS. STONER. The funeral of Mrs. Lydia Stoner, relict of the late John Stoner, took place Friday from the Methodist church. The deceased was over 80 years ot age, and was well known throughout the Cove as one of the most charitable and hospitable ladies within its borders. More than fifty years ago she connected herself with that branch of the Christian church known as the River Brethren, and has ever since that time lived a blameless life, endearing herself to all with whom she came in contact by her unassuming Christian manners. Her remains were followed to the grave by an immense concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The services were conducted by Revs. Andrew Bassler, John and Abraham Bowers, the following gentlemen acting as pall bearers: David Wolfe, James Giboney, Alexander Bobb, E. Delozir, F.M. Bloom, David Burket.
1880 Letters of administration were issued to D.L. Keagy for the estate if Lydia Stoner deceased on August 24 in Blair County. [22]
1914 Henry Stoner, son of John Stoner and Lydia Brumbaugh, died, at age 77 on July 1, 1914, in Martinsburg Twp, Blair County, Pennsylvania. Henry Stoner was born on October 19, 1836, in Blair County. (Death certificate: 68552). [23]
HENRY STONER. Special to the Tribune. Martinsburg,July 1.-At his home in Martinsburg, Henry Stoner died this morning at 10:30 o'clock of intestinal trouble, after an illness of only two days. Few knew of his illness and the announcement of his death was
a surprise to many.Deceased was a son of John and Lydia Stoner and was born on the Stone house farm, at the western border of the borough, now known as the Hagey farm, on October 19, 1836. On December 1, 1859, he was united in marriage Miss. Magdalene Zook, who died years ago. He was one of a family of twelve children, four of whom are living -David Stoner and Mrs. Elizabeth Ketterman, of Lanark, Ill.; Levi Stoner, of New Berlin, O., and, Christian B. Stoner, of Martinsburg. He was the father of seven children, two of whom died in infancy, and Mrs. Harriet Kensinger died twenty years ago. The four children living are Mrs. F. P. Crissman and Mrs. L. R. Kauffman, of Martinsburg; Fred Stoner, of Altoona; Gertrude Stoner, at home. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stoner was of a quiet disposition and was an excellent citizen. For thirty years he was an employe of the Pennsylvania Railroad company, continuing until retired at the age limit. For six years he was janitor of the borough school building, a position he held at the time of his death. He was a member of the brethren in Christ church for forty-six years. The funeral will occur Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Services will be held in the brick church south of Martinsburg, and will be conducted by Rev Isaac H. Stern. Interment will be made in Spring Hope cemetery.
1918 Christian B Stoner, son of John Stoner and Lydia Brumbaugh, died, at age 86 on July 21, 1918, in Martinsburg Twp, Blair County, Pennsylvania. Christian B Stoner was born on October 18, 1831, in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. (Death certificate: 78739). [25]

1855-57 John Stoner of South Woodbury Twp, Bedford County died. This John Stoner was not the spouse of Lydia Brumbaugh.
1856 David Stoner, spouse of Nancy Stoner, died on January 1 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was born on December 17, 1794, in Leitersburg, Washington County, Maryland, son of John Stoner and Elizabeth Stoner. [26]

1872 John K. Steiner died on February 13 and was buried at Falling Spring Reformed Mennonite Cemetery, Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. John K. Steiner was born on January 13, 1844. [35] [36]
1872 John K Stoner's estate was considered in probate court in Blair County, Pennsylvania on 1 Mar 1872. Mrs. Maggie Stoner renounced administration. Letters were issued to David B Stoner on the estate of John K. Stoner late of Altoona deceased. [37] [38]
1877 Cloyd Lesley Manning was born on November 27, 1877, in MT Union Hun, Pennsylvania, son of Morris Manning and Margaret Stoner. [39]
1880 Samuel Stoner (age 12, born in Pennsylvania, single), stepson (step son), lived in Mount Union Twp, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, in a household with Morris Manning (31), Margaret Manning (32), and Cloyd Manning (3). Samuel Stoner's parents were both born in Pennsylvania. [40]
