Conclusion

This research provides the most current and comprehensive description of the extent and nature of student athlete gambling across the sports of football and men's and women's basketball. The research indicated that 45% of male student athletes gambled on sports and one in twenty male student athletes engaged in activities that could have an impact on the outcome of a game. These findings are serious and indicate the prevalence of gambling among intercollegiate student athletes.

As gambling becomes more accepted in society, combating gambling problems will become more challenging. Yet, if the enterprise of collegiate sports is to survive, it must develop ways to maintain the integrity of the contests. Failure to do so may result in predetermined outcomes of contests and a loss of value, educational and otherwise, for collegiate sports. The great American institution of intercollegiate sports depends on a comprehensive response to this problem.
