Abstract: |
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, second only to stroke, with a prevalence of 0.6 - 0.8% of the world's population. Two-thirds of the patients achieve sufficient seizure control from anticonvulsive medication, and another 8-10% could benefit from resective surgery. For the remaining 25% of patients, no sufficient treatment is currently available. This overview summarizes findings obtained from applying different time series analysis techniques to electrophysiological recordings from epilepsy patients undergoing presurgical evaluation. Apart from clinical and behavioral aspects of epilepsy and their correlation with dynamical features we shall address the issue of identifying precursors of seizures, which may enable both investigations of basic mechanisms leading to seizure initiation in humans and the development of adequate seizure warning and prevention strategies. |
