Desolation
Beijing, China, near Wudaokou, 2006
In the midst of its gargantuan effort to prepare for the 2008 Olympics, Beijing has been razing entire plots of land to remake a sometimes marred cityscape. Signs on lampposts declare the coming of a new era: a new Beijing, a new Haidian district. What will China look like in 2008 when millions of athletes and spectators flood its shores? This image suggests that, at least for Beijing, it will be a picture of glass, steel and modern transport. But just like the man pedaling across the picture, the city’s makeover dwarfs perhaps the greater transformation occurring on its streets.
