Slide 4 - Toluene Formation Increased by Surface Hydrogen Reduction

In order to explore the competition between condensation and hydrogenolysis, the surface was predosed with either hydrogen or oxygen. Hydrogen predosing lowers toluene formation by 25%. Oxygen causes a reduction of free surface hydrogen by reaction to form water below the toluene desorption temperature. This causes a dramatic increase in toluene formation, with a twenty times increase in desorbing toluene.
