So sorry, but you are wrong. If you are using a recent linux installation
with MD5 passwords, and you are using DHX, you can have passwords more
than 8 characters.

To belatedly reply to earlier threads on this list, I see no reason for
DHX not to be the default authentication method for netatalk. It's the
default used by recent versions of the AppleShare client (3.8.6 is an
improvement over previous versions). It's also the default used by OS X
public beta.

The best thing about it is that users don't have to do any thinking to get
password encryption, and they only have to remember one password for both
the "UNIX" side and the "AppleShare" side.
