Precisely!! A possible alternative to Netatalk will be MacOSX Server,
which we are testing right now. Presently, there is no comparison
to Linux. MacOSX Server is missing many services and is completely
without
any of the comfortable utilities that Linux has. Apart from the
core NetBSD it apparently tries to do a things with ideas
from NextStep and adds a proprietary parallel system of users,
groups, permissions, etc. With Apple's resources and future
existence behind it, it may amount to something in a year or two --
but it aint there yet.

How can you say that? The only way this can be cheaper is if you
have a cast-off NT system that you take over from someone else.
If you have to actually PAY for it, Linux only costs around
80 Marks in Germany (SuSE 6.4), has all the services that NT offers
and more, and will use your hardware more effectively. You can actually
USE a Linux server for other work without the danger of it crashing.
Try to install anything on a running NT server: 90% of all
packages demand that you restart the system. Forget it. You can't
use it for anything but a server.
What I am saying is that the price of the NT software AND the
fact that you don't get to use the system for anything else
make the effective cost much higher than a Linux system.
I'm starting to preach. I'll stop here and continue in
comp.os.linux.advocacy.
