Actually, the "bad" files were just one of the symptoms of the real
problem. The problem was a port on a switch (call it the server switch)
was generating CRC errors. This port was connected to another switch
(call it the clients switch). When the files were downloaded (from
server to client), many CRC errors were generated on the bad port. The
"bad" files must have contained data that worked together with the CRC
errors in some fashion. Because once the two switches were connected
together via another port on the server switch, everything worked OK
(and no more CRC errors).

For everyone's info, the symptoms were poor appletalk performance (10 -
15 min. downloads took 30 min., then more and more each day as the port
deteriorated), tcp/ip connections being dropped (but only on downloads
and were able to be duplicated on demand with "bad" files), and finally
windows with netware clients dropping connections with their novell
server on the same server switch. The port degraded over a two week
period, at least. Connecting the linux/netatlk servers to another
switch helped focus diagnostic attention on the server switch.
