Jonathan,

you will have to install either the crypt package that comes with the base
installation or any port that makes use of the libcrypto.so.1 library like
OPENSSL. You find those under /usr/ports or at the FreeBSD ports
collection on the web.

You can also use the configuration file and tell the server not to use
encrypted passwords only plain text in which case the library is not
needed. Please see the man page for the conf file to do this.
