Thanks to several helpful folks, I have a solution to my problem. Here's
what worked:

I downloaded and compiled with PAM and tcp_wrapper support,
ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/users/asun/testing/pre-asun2.1.4-39
test.tar.gz

I then added the following to /etc/conf.modules:
alias net-pf-5 appletalk

It now works like a charm :-)
