I'm using 1.4b2+asun2.1.3 on LinuxPPC with unswitched 100Base-TX, and I've
played MP3 files before just like you're trying to do with no problems.
Are you getting excessive collisions if you're not using switches?
Have you tried to reproduce this problem on another Mac?
For what it's worth, I've also burned CD's off the netatalk server with a 4x
writer.

Are your AppleShare volumes mounting with IP or AppleTalk? IP is much, much
faster than AppleTalk. Try restarting netatalk on the linux box, and do a
"Get Info" on the mounted server volume to see if it's using IP or
AppleTalk.
