I assume that wes is a legal user that has unhindered access to lp and
lp1. In my papd.conf, i didn't define op and it works fine. However, my
setup sends jobs to the printer over the network using pap, so it's a
little different.

i assume this is all on linux?

you might also try defining a log file for lpd errors:

:lf=/var/log/lpd-errors:
