Thanks for the reply. I found the answer on the linux-atalk list: it would seem
to be a problem in a Linux network driver. "ifconfig eth0 allmulti" fixed it (so
to speak).
I did try restarting the server. I felt really baffled by the situation because
precisely nothing (in terms of configuration of Appletalk-capable machines) had
changed within a few hours the incident occurred.
