The Environmental Semester

Housing

MIKE SHRIBERG

As part of Housing's inaugural effort to get involved in the University-wide Environmental Theme Semester, we have devised a number of projects, events and activities. The goal is to incorporate Housing into this important endeavor and provide a framework for future participation in theme semesters. The following is a summary of the more important events that are planned for this semester:

RA
PROGRAMMING
Each RA, RHA member, and Hall Council member has received a memorandum outlining possible residence education activities dealing with the environment. The goal was to encourage floor-level environmental participation. Examples of the activities suggested include: bringing in the student Environmental Justice group's program, having the Recycling office discuss how to and the importance of recycling and inviting specific local environmental leaders to speak about their issue of importance. Each Coordinator of Residence Education has also been made aware of these opportunities.

ORION
SOCIETY

The Orion Society is a team of writers and poets that offer a series of readings, workshops, and discussions that promote nature literacy. They will be coming to Ann Arbor March 23-25 and staying in Oxford Housing. They are interested in running programs at the Residence Halls for those who are interested.

SCULPTOR

Patrick Dougherty, an environmental sapling sculptor, will be coming to Ann Arbor March 30-April 17 to make his unique giant sculptures (probably on the Diag). He will be staying at Family Housing and visiting with students in the Residential College (RC) as part of a course, having lunch with interested students and staff in the Lloyd Hall Scholars Program (LHS) and RC, presenting an evening slideshow and discussion on his work at RC, and running a program for children at Family Housing.

RESIDENCE HALL
DINING

We're working on lots of stuff for the dining halls. Like Theme Dinners, Table Tents, and information posters on vegetarianism, and "Take Only What You Need."

FOOTSTEPS INTO
CHANGE

Patrick Giantonio, who walked across Africa for 4 years as a protest to hunger, is doing a university-wide multimedia presentation on his journey as a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and environmental activity. As part of housingAs ETS effort, he will be meeting with interested students in the RC during a course and lecture, and will be staying at Oxford Housing.

MOVIES

RHA will be featuring environmentally related movies each month on its Movie Channel. For example, January will feature Andromeda Strain, Burn and Soylent Green. We are working to put a message about the ETS at the beginning and end of each movie.
