What It Does

• Indexes:
  • General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, and Security Council and related publications, 1971+
  • Includes Official Records and mimeographed publications
• Full text of General Assembly, ECOSOC, and Security Council resolutions

Location

• Documents Center has CD-ROM and publications being indexed
• While the CD-ROM index is the most comprehensive index, paper copies of the United Nations Documents Index, UNDOC, and UNDEX are located in the Documents Center--UN Ref. section

Booting Up

• CD-ROM initially boots up to all years
• Choose Search Level
  • Level 1: User-friendly keyword searching of all fields
  • Level 2: Searches may be limited to author, subject, title, date, type of publication, text, etc.

Navigation Protocols

• Highlight numerous on-screen instructions and press ENTER
• Function keys at bottom
• Return to previous page by pressing ESCAPE

Search Protocols: Both Levels

• Boolean logic
  • this word AND that word
  • this word OR that word
  • this word NOT that word
  • An initial search set may be combined with a new search:
    • Level 1: Highlight prompt
    • Level 2: Type Boolean operator when given prompt

• Truncation
  • Single wild card character: ?
    war crim! picks up war crime
  • Mulitple wild card character: *
    war crim* picks up war crime, war crimes, war criminals
• Quotations used for:
  • Words containing parethenses or commas
  • Phrases containg the word AND, OR, NOT, NEAR, TO, or SAME (e.g. "food and drink")
• Phrase searching assumed when two words together
  • war crimes
• Proximity Searching
  • SAMES=Search for both terms occurring in the same sentence
  • NEARx=Search for both terms within x words of each other
  • ADJ=Search for both terms within x words of each other in the order entered
