A
white rose Ariana's log, Chapter 140

"Love is blind because Whimsy plucked out its eyes."

    Saturday, February 18, 5

Ariana finds a note addressed to her on the desk in her study one morning, four days after Lucien agrees to divorce Angelique. It reads:

    Ariana,
I have tried to accommodate you in every way I could, and yet still you scheme and try to push me away. In this I suppose you are a proper woman of Chaos...truly your father's daughter. It is apparent that there is no longer a place for me in House Vetch. Take care of Anne-Marie...if you have any honor, you will see her innocence in our conflict.
    - Angelique

Fifteen minutes later, Ariana learns that Angelique has immolated herself in the middle of the Court of Thelbane. Ariana is rather upset by this and goes in search of Lucien. He's in a foul mood, though, and wants to be left alone. Ariana keeps to herself for a while as well, then seeks him out again and asks why Angelique did it. Lucien explains that Anne-Marie would have become illegitimate if the divorce went through. He offered to adopt Anne-Marie, but Angelique wouldn't hear of it. Ariana says that if she'd known Angelique was willing to kill herself, she might have reconsidered, and asks why Angelique didn't come to see her. Maybe her pride wouldn't let her. Ariana mentions that Angelique sent her a note, so Lucien asks to see it.. When Ariana hands it over, he notices that it appears to have been read many times. He throws it into the fire after he reads it. Ariana asks why he did that. So she won't continue tormenting herself about it. Ariana thinks Anne-Marie is going to hate her. That depends on what they tell her. What does he think they should tell her? He's not sure yet, but sometimes it's best to lie. There will be rumors, though. Ariana figures she'll look like the Queen bitch in this, which is not how she wanted to start her time in Chaos. Lucien thinks he'll look like the main villain, actually. While some might think Ariana encouraged him in the direction of the divorce, he's the one who actually filed for it. Ariana still is upset about what happened, although she confesses she thinks Angelique intended for the note to make her feel bad. Oh, he's sure of it. Did he think this was going to happen? He prepared for another outcome. Ariana says she wouldn't have pushed for the divorce if she knew this would happen. He knows. So what happens now? The House goes into mourning, black for six months, gray for another six. Does he think she should speak to Anne-Marie or leave her alone? He advises waiting for Anne-Marie to come to her.

    Sunday, February 19, 5 - Wednesday, March 22, 5

Surprisingly, Lucien actually seems to be upset about Angelique's death. Ariana tries to talk to him about it, but he clams up and doesn't want to discuss it. Ariana abides by his wishes, but tells him that if he decides he wants to talk about it, she's there. He thanks her for that. Ariana is also rather upset about Angelique's death, but for once she manages not to blame herself for what happened. She is distressed by the fact that it's upsetting Lucien, though, since she was indirectly the cause of it. Once Lucien catches on to this, he pretends to get over it.

Anne-Marie carefully avoids Ariana during the month after Angelique's death. Ariana asks Lucien if Anne-Marie's been to see him. Yes. How is she? She's very angry. At her? At a lot of people, but Ariana's on the list, yes. He advises giving Anne-Marie more time. Ariana asks who's taking care of Anne-Marie now, since she's not old enough to be without some kind of guardian. One of his daughters that was still floating around. Ariana is surprised that he would trust one of them to raise Anne-Marie, since she was under the impression that they hated him. Actually, they don't. It's more a mix of fear and respect, and since he's been back, they don't know what to do with him because he's changed so much. Ariana figures he must find that somewhat amusing. Oh yes.

Whimsy visits Ariana to set things in motion so that she'll be fertile the night of her wedding. Ariana is able to arrange this without difficulty.

    Thursday, March 23, 5

Whimsy's bridal shower takes place. It's rather boring, until a stripper shows up in a rainbow shimmer, along with a zither player, and begins dancing on the table. Whimsy kicks one of the table legs and breaks it in an effort to stop the show, but the man gracefully slides down to the floor, picks Whimsy up and twirls her around, then puts her down and keeps dancing. Whimsy leaves. Alexandra follows her briefly, then returns and breaks out the liquor. The dancer proves to be quite adept. Even Maddy, who was originally surprised, gets into watching him. Ariana is even able to get Maddy to dance with him, after a bit of persuading. Ariana, naturally, dances with him as well, as does Alexandra. The party goes late into the night, and Lucien benefits from the results when Ariana finally gets home.

    Friday, March 24, 5

Ariana asks Lucien if they need to wear mourning clothes to Whimsy's wedding. No, that would be rather tacky. A black armband will do fine. Well, Ariana wasn't sure what the custom was, and since the last time she wasn't familiar with custom someone set themselves on fire, well, better safe than sorry.

    Saturday, March 25, 5

Whimsy's wedding is a splendid affair, elegant thanks to Flora's involvement. Ariana leaves Jalana in charge of the children, since she's in the bridal party. Alexandra is the matron of honor. Elspeth, Ariana and Maddy are the bridesmaids, wearing Empire waist gowns of green. Enver, Despil's son, is the best man, with some Jesbys as the groomsmen. Since the wedding is in the afternoon, Shard isn't there. Suhuy walks Whimsy down the aisle. Whimsy pretends enthusiasm, while Edwin is genuinely happy. Poor sap. Vincent is nowhere to be seen.

At the reception, Vincent shows up to steal the second dance with the bride. Ariana points this out to Lucien, who comments that romance has never been something Vetches are much good at. Ariana smiles at that and says, "I know. Come dance with me," and leads him onto the dance floor. Ishmael talks to Vincent after the dance is over. Then Ishmael starts getting drinks for himself and Vincent. Ariana notices this and asks Lucien what kind of a drunk he was when he was younger. He didn't drink much. Oh? It didn't agree with him. She recalls the blue incident with Laughter, doesn't she? Oh dear. Why does she ask? She points out Vincent. Oh dear. He suggests that maybe they should leave now. They can't, the cake hasn't been served. Ishmael disappears for a bit, leaving Vincent alone. Vincent promptly stumbles into a chair. Ariana tells Lucien that Vincent really is like him when he was drunk. Lucien takes her on to the dance floor again to distract her. She spies Vincent drawing a bit later, and comments that won't be good. Lucien says he's not looking. Later, Ishmael takes the drawing away from Vincent. Vincent shoots Trump energy at him, misses, and Gavin disappears. Not too long afterward, Ariana sees Ishmael supporting Vincent as they leave the room, along with Caine. This prompts another comment by her to Lucien about Vincent's resemblance to him when he was drunk. Lucien pays her back for this by introducing her to someone at the end of the dance and then disappearing while the woman is blathering on.

Once Ariana manages to extricate herself from the conversation, she tries Trumping Gavin, but can't get through to him. She thinks for a bit, then Trumps Brand. He answers holding Vincent's limp body. Ah, so he's taking care of the Vincent situation? Yes. Ariana's going to stay out of it, since it would only embarrass him to have his mother involved, but she is concerned about someone that Vincent made disappear. She can't reach him via Trump. Who was it? Gavin. Brand says he'll take care of it.

Since there's still no sign of Lucien, Ariana spends some time dancing with Foster, Driscoll and Caine. When Gavin pops in later on, Ariana dances with him as well. She assumes that Brand found him? Oh yes. Where was he? On a tropical island. He asks what happened. She explains that he got hit by something meant for Ishmael. Ah, that figures. She asks how he's been otherwise, not that his main problem's been dealt with. Better. She understands he wasn't working for Lasker, after all. No, but he's glad she didn't take his call that one time, since he had been making a token effort to find her so Lasker would think he was cooperating. He asks what happened to Lasker. Ariana is surprised that he doesn't know. She reveals that Felix killed him. Gavin is shocked. Ariana explains how it happened, saying that Felix intended to leave Lasker in the 'Tween. Gavin observes that now there are demons in the 'Tween. There are? How? Someone put them there the time that all those demons came to Amber. Ah. In that case, Felix was doubly fortunate. Gavin agrees. Ariana asks if anyone's gone after the remaining vampires. Not that he knows of. Ariana is surprised. Maybe he can hire someone to deal with them. Like who? Well, her husband's house does specialize in assassination. That could be pricey. True. Maybe he'll just encourage Random to deal with it. Ariana agrees that would be cheaper.

Ariana eventually finds Lucien and says she's sorry for teasing him. They dance a few more times before the party ends, at which point they return home and Ariana makes up for all her earlier teasing.

    Sunday, March 26, 5

Ariana finds out that Morgan witnessed Angelique's death, which he describes in great and gory detail. Ariana gets very pale when he starts talking about how long she screamed, and how long she took to die, and how they had to scrape her remains off the ground afterward. She excuses herself and is quietly sick. Lucien finds her, gets her some fizzy tablets, and holds her for a bit.

A short time later, Ariana receives a Trump call from Whimsy, who wants to come by later so Ariana can check on her. This is fine with Ariana. Whimsy Trumps her again a few hours later and comes through. Ariana checks on her and says that things seem fine, but implantation of the embryo won't happen for another day. Whimsy is surprised by this, since she thought it happened immediately. Ariana tells her to come by tomorrow. Whimsy asks if she's all right. Ariana explains about her talk with Morgan earlier. Whimsy hadn't heard that Angelique was dead, and calls her a stupid cow. She comforts Ariana and points out that Angelique just did it to hurt her. Ariana is disturbed that Angelique would hate her enough to kill herself that horribly. Whimsy points out that maybe she isn't dead. Ariana thinks about that, and admits that Angelique could have split herself. Whimsy thinks it's unlikely that someone like Angelique would have chosen such an unimaginative solution as killing herself. Ariana admits that makes sense. Whimsy hugs her. Ariana asks how Whimsy is doing. Whimsy explains that she tried using Granny's lust spell, but ingested the dust instead of inhaling it. Ariana winces. Whimsy admits the effect was much greater than she anticipated. She figures she's going to have to find Edwin and explain later. Ariana can see why he might be upset that his wife had to drug them to have sex, although she understands why Whimsy did it. She figures Edwin wouldn't be so upset if he didn't love her. She thinks the level of his devotion is rather unusual, really, especially given how Whimsy's made no pretense of loving him. Whimsy's noticed. She thinks it's due to a compulsion. It's been there for a while, though, so it probably can't be removed.

Ariana finds Lucien and asks if he thinks Angelique could still be alive. He admits that it's a possibility. Is that why he was so upset when she died? He still doesn't want to talk about it.

    Monday, March 27, 5

Whimsy returns the next day. Ariana determines that she's carrying identical twins. What does that mean? Ariana explains how identical twins are formed. Are they boys or girls? Ariana doesn't want to check on that until they're more settled. She tells Whimsy to come back in a week.

    Monday, April 3, 5

Ariana checks Whimsy again. There are still only two babies, and they are boys. Whimsy asks Ariana to be her midwife. Ariana is happy to accept.

    Friday, April 7, 5

    Ariana turns 77.

    Saturday, April 8, 5 - Wednesday, May 24, 5

Vincent eventually adjusts to Whimsy's marriage, his demeanor changing from mad, to sullen, and then finally to accepting.

Whimsy's pregnancy seems to be developing more slowly than normal. She also suffers from morning sickness. Ariana gives her some fizzy tablets and tells her that in most women, the nausea ends with the first trimester, although she admits that isn't always the case.

    Thursday, May 25, 5

When Ariana is six months pregnant, she contacts Brand again and asks if he has time to talk. He holds out his hand and comes through. She asks if he can check on the baby now. He can. He'll need to touch her abdomen to have the best chance, though. She agrees to this, once she changes from her dress into pants and a shirt. Brand touches her abdomen, concentrates for a bit, then says he isn't sure. There are things in the baby that are familiar, and there are things there that are not. If Sand is there, she's not the same. What does that mean? He doesn't know. It's not Sand in any way that he can identify. If it is Sand, it's only part of Sand. The rest is brand new. It's like, when she passed through the Fount, it remade her. There's no evil in the child, no hateful thoughts, no thoughts at all, actually. So Sand has been reincarnated? In a sense. He notes that in Ariana, Sand will have a chance to have the happy childhood she never had in her first life. Ariana is rather relieved, to say the least, and thanks him for putting her mind at ease. Brand tells her that if she ever needs anything else from him, she has only to call, and then he Trumps out.

Ariana tells Lucien the good news. He's also rather relieved. She asks if he thought Sand was in the baby. He admits he thought there was a good chance. He just didn't want her to worry unnecessarily. She admits she thought it was likely also, and was trying not to think about it. So now can they decorate the nursery? She nods, and asks if he still likes the name Dorian. He does. They celebrate the good news by having sex. Lucien is remarkably attentive, in fact. Eventually, during the afterglow, he asks what she's doing tomorrow. Nothing, why? Because they're getting married. Needless to say, she's rather surprised to hear this, since she thought they were already married. Not in Chaos. Why did he marry her in Faerie then? It was her idea. No it wasn't, he suggested it. Um... He distracts her by nibbling on her ear. She asks why he didn't tell her about this until today. Because he knew she'd kill him. She tells him he's right, adding that you can't just spring a wedding on someone the night before. Can he even marry her when the House is in mourning? That's why it's a small ceremony, only them, the Priest of the Serpent, a few guests. The big ceremony can come later. What if she decides she likes being single? Then he goes to plan B. What is plan B? Oh, nothing. He attempts to distract her. This is successful for a while, but she eventually comes back to her question. He still won't tell her what plan B is, however. In that case, she says she won't give him an answer. She tries using sex to get the information out of him, but while he doesn't object, it doesn't work either.

    Friday, May 26, 5

In the morning, Lucien finally gives in, hands Ariana a bathing suit, and tells her to change. He changes into a bathing suit as well and holds out his hand. When she takes it, he activates a Trump into Shadow and they spend a week on a Caribbean cruise. Lucien pampers her the whole time, feeding her chocolate, etc. Ariana admits that she likes plan B, and the week gives her time to get used to the idea of another wedding. She asks Lucien what the ceremony will be like, and what sort of vows she'll have to agree to. He admits that since it's a formal Chaos wedding, she'll have to promise to obey him. Given the church in Chaos, this can't be modified, but he says he won't hold her to it. She decides she can live with this. She asks why the wedding in Faerie doesn't count, when it was valid enough to let him restart the House after it took place. Because it was invalidated later by the fact that Angelique turned out to have been alive when it took place. Ariana says that the Faerie ceremony will always be their real wedding, as far as she is concerned. Lucien responds that the ceremonies aren't important to him, as long as he has her.

Ariana and Lucien return to Chaos with almost no time having passed. The wedding ceremony takes place in the House chapel, with a few of the other Dukes and Duchesses, Ariana's children, Mirelle, Devlin, Tamaryn, and a few House Vetch members as the only guests. The ceremony goes off without a hitch.

    Saturday, May 27, 5 - Monday, July 31, 5

Ariana tells Vincent that Sand appears to be gone for good. Vincent finds the news interesting.

Whimsy's morning sickness does not abate after her first trimester, much to her dismay. Her pregnancy does eventually speed up and become more normal. Ariana also realizes that the babies will most likely be normal sized, as opposed to the small size of most faerie babies, so she advises that Whimsy will need to be confined to bed for the last two to three months of the pregnancy. Whimsy asks Ariana if she can arrange to have someone there from House Vetch at the birth, in case someone tries something. Ariana thinks she can arrange this.

Ariana asks Lucien if he can have someone there at the birth, in case something happens. Since she'll be there as Whimsy's midwife, Lucien insists on coming himself.

Ariana's own pregnancy progresses normally. The baby is vigorous but healthy, and is rather fond of somersaults, at least until he gets too big.

    Tuesday, August 1, 5

Ariana's water breaks three weeks early. She sends for Lucien, who arrives quickly. She tells him that everything seems to be normal, but she's worried since it's happening early. He examines her, and agrees that the baby seems to be fine. The contractions continue, and while they are uncomfortable, they aren't nearly as bad as during her previous labors. After an hour, she gets the urge to push. She mentions this to Lucien, who tells her it's time. She's surprised that it's so soon. The pain gets a little sharper, and then the baby's out. Lucien cleans him off and hands him to her. He's small and has no hair, but otherwise appears to be normal. Ariana has one nervous moment when the baby reaches out and grabs the charm pendant that Meander made to detect Sand's presence, but Lucien reassures her that it's just the grabbing reflex. Ariana asks if he has any idea why the baby came so early. He isn't sure, but he's checked her and the baby, and both are perfectly healthy. Then he reminds her that she should probably Trump Jalana, who's going to be mad that she missed the birth. Well, she didn't think it would be over this soon. She asks why he didn't Trump Jalana. He admits that he was worried about her, since she was so early. She says he's sweet and kisses him, then Trumps Jalana. As expected, Jalana is miffed at not being called, but still comes through and fusses over her new brother.

    Wednesday, August 2, 5 - Thursday, August 24, 5

Ariana begins working on her shapeshifting in earnest, now that the pregnancy no longer interferes with it. She also brings Dorian around to Mirelle, Devlin, Kira, Grayson, his kids, and their mothers. Grayson, of course, remains uninterested in children, his own included, and continues to spend most of his time partying.

    Friday, August 25, 5

Maddy goes into labor while Whimsy and Ariana are visiting her. She's hugely pregnant by this point, and not at all happy with Ishmael. Ariana blocks some of the pain, which helps. The first part of the labor is normal, but Maddy really begins struggling later. Ariana Trumps Tamaryn in to help, since Tamaryn's had experience with delivering large babies. After being in labor for a little over ten hours, Maddy delivers a healthy 10 pound baby boy. Ouch. Ishmael names him Reese.

    Saturday, August 26, 5 - Sunday, December 24, 5

Dorian's hair eventually grows in a reddish-brown. He seems to be a happy baby. He's very curious, and once he starts crawling he gets into everything. Bryan reacts to the baby by being rather clingy at first, but he soon takes on the roll of older brother. All of Ariana's younger children tend to run around in a child pack of sorts, along with Devlin and Grayson's kids when they are in Amber. Briana is the ringleader of the little group, of course.

Lucien continues to be unwilling to discuss what happened to Angelique, and won't give any reason why. Ariana is concerned and frustrated by this, both because she's worried that it's not healthy for him to keep whatever he's feeling bottled up inside of him, and because she needs to talk to someone about it herself. The matter only comes up occasionally, however, usually when something or someone reminds her of Angelique. Most of the time, Ariana remains happily wrapped up in her family and her duties as Lady of the House.

Whimsy is confined to bed for the last two months of her pregnancy, and actually looks like she might be able to carry the children to full term. On one visit by Ariana, Maddy, and their babies, Whimsy gives Maddy some yellow powder. It's the lust powder. Whimsy tells Maddy that one or two grains in a drink will make her and Ishmael wild about each other. Ariana recommends inhaling the dust instead of drinking it. Maddy tells a rather amusing story about Ishmael. When Reese was born, she told him that he would have to take care of weaning Clare. Apparently he tried to do this by holding the baby under a cow and squirting milk into her mouth. Ariana finds this very amusing.

    Monday, December 25, 5

Whimsy's due date comes and goes uneventfully.

Ariana Trumps to Amber in the evening, and finds Shard in his quarters. She tells him about the Angelique situation, and her concern over Lucien's reaction to it. She is a bit worried that Lucien might subconsciously be holding her partly to blame for setting off what happened. Shard, as usual, thinks she'd be better off leaving Lucien, but doesn't push the point. He suggests that if Lucien doesn't want to talk about the matter, he's probably hiding something. That's not a possibility that Ariana had thought of, but it makes sense to her, especially since she couldn't figure out why Lucien would be bothered by Angelique's death when she likely isn't even really dead.

Ariana returns to Vetchways and goes looking for Lucien, but he's no longer in the Ways. He remains absent for the next couple of days.

    Thursday, December 28, 5

Lucien returns in the afternoon, and Ariana finds him in his study. He looks to be in good spirits and greets her with a smile. She notes that he seems to be in a good mood. He admits it, and asks why she was looking for him. Well, he did vanish unexpectedly, so she thought he might have been avoiding her. He claims it was just a good time for him to work on something, adding that she needn't worry about Angelique any longer, since he's found her. Where was she? Hibernating, far out in Shadow. Apparently she split herself before having one of her selves commit suicide. Losing part of herself that way was probably a pretty large shock to her system, though, and he wouldn't be surprised if she gets Chaos cancer as a result. So, what did he do when he found her? He brought Anne-Marie there, and explained what Angelique had done, and why. Anne-Marie agreed to look after her mother until she wakes up. Ariana asks if Anne-Marie won't be lonely there. Well, he left her servants and tutors to look after her, and she seems to want the time to think. Ariana asks what he thinks Angelique will do when she wakes up. He isn't going to speculate. When Angelique wakes up, he'll go find out. So, if Angelique is still alive, does this mean they aren't really married again? No, the divorce papers were signed before the Chaos wedding took place. So he never thought she was dead, even from the very beginning? No. Is he going to adopt Anne-Marie? They'll discuss that later. Ariana says she wants to go with him to see Angelique when she wakes up. Lucien frowns at that, saying no, he doesn't think so, but they can discuss that later too. Ariana opts not to argue about it now, and leaves him to his paperwork.

    Friday, December 29, 5

Ariana gets a Trump call in the middle of the night, when she's all warm and cozy, the baby's asleep, and she's snuggled up to Lucien. She mutters, "Oh hell," and reaches for her Trump deck. Lucien mutters something unintelligible. Ariana identifies the caller as Whimsy, and mutters, "Oh hell," again. She gets a stabbing pain as she takes the call, which causes her to sit upright. Whimsy says that it's started. Ariana says she'll be right there. She wakes Lucien, who wonders why births always seem to happen at night. They dress quickly and then go to Jesbyways, where Lucien soon disappears, as expected. Whimsy's labor progresses normally, and painfully. After several hours, Whimsy realizes that she forgot to tell Fiona that she's in labor. Oops. She manages, with some difficulty, to Trump Fiona and update her. Eight hours into the labor, Ariana sits Whimsy up and tells her to begin pushing. Fiona comes through immediately. After a bit more time, and more pain, the first baby is born, healthy and normal. He doesn't have pointed ears, though. Ariana examines him and realizes that he's neither human nor faerie, nor even half faerie like her first children, but something else entirely. He's something new. She tells Whimsy that the baby is normal and healthy and hands him to Fiona. The second baby comes shortly thereafter, and is also fine. Once the afterbirth is delivered, Whimsy asks Ariana to help her up. Ariana insists that she shouldn't move yet. Whimsy asks Fiona to take the babies into another room and see if faerie magic works around them. Once Fiona leaves with the twins, Whimsy asks Ariana to check to see if faerie magic works around her now. Ariana tries a glamour, which works. She's surprised. Whimsy isn't. She's not real happy about no longer being a living Faerie Ward. Ariana points out that she'll be able to use faerie magic again, though. Fiona returns with the babies and says that faerie magic worked around them. Ariana speculates that maybe Whimsy passed some of the Ward's energy into her children, diluting it. This is quickly proven when Whimsy has Ariana try another glamour while the children are present, and it doesn't work this time.

Whimsy asks Ariana how long it will be before she can walk. Ariana offers to heal her enough to accomplish this. Whimsy allows this. Then she Trumps Edwin and asks him to come to her rooms. When Edwin arrives, Whimsy hands one of the babies to him and says his name is Castor. Then she asks him to send her things to her, and Trumps out with Fiona and the other baby. Edwin just sits there after she disappears, holding Castor and looking sad. Ariana places a comforting hand on his shoulder, which he touches briefly. She tells him to contact her if he needs any advice, since she's had some experience with children, then she and Lucien return to Vetchways. She's rather saddened by how things ended, and asks Lucien to hold her for a while.
