A white rose Session 25

Amber, year one, day 136 continued

      Afternoon

I have just about given up on trying to patch things up with Heather. I have tried to be friendly to her, but she continues to ignore me. And then she disappears with our only Chaosite prisoner. Eral only knows what Heather is doing with her now. And she had the nerve to act offended when I wanted to know what she was doing. She acts as if the prisoner is her personal property, to do with as she pleases, without answering to anyone. I could not just let her do what she willed, without first ascertaining her intentions. I would have asked the same of anyone, and we have more reason to be suspicious of her than most. I fear I will never comprehend her.

Given that Random and Driscoll are both injured, I decided Vialle was the most appropriate person to report Heather's actions to. After all, it is possible Heather was ordered to examine the sorceress. Most people would have said as much, but Heather is far too arrogant to ever explain her actions. It turns out that Vialle did not even know we had a prisoner! Apparently no one bothered to tell her. Somehow I am not surprised. This family is terrible about sharing information. She did not seem too concerned, so I decided not to worry about it. There is nothing more I can do. Vialle seems to be a very friendly lady. I rather like her.

I finally have a Trump deck of my own. I requested one from Vialle, and was taken to the library to get one. I guess that is where they keep the extras. I wonder how many spare decks there are? My new deck leaves me with duplicate cards for Ahab and Felix, so I have found a secure place for them.

Ariadne seems to be healing rapidly from her burns. She acts rather confused, but it is too soon for me to tell whether that is due to her injuries, or the morphine Alex gave her. Ahab told Alex the correct dosage (I guess he has been on the receiving end enough to know), but given Ariadne's physiology, it is hard to say if it was too much.

Deirdre learned of Ahab's injuries and paid him a visit. I pity the person who had to give her the news. She seems to have decided to supervise his care. At least he listens to her more than he does to the rest of us.

Eric is just as bad. He refused to let anyone tend to his wounds. That branch of the family is so stubborn! Well, he is old enough to take care of himself. If he wants to bleed to death, I am too tired to stop him.

To be honest, I think I am beginning to tire of Amber. The constant crises, one right after the other, are wearing me down. First Patternfall, then Coral's kidnapping, now Rygat. It never seems to stop. Looking back over these diaries, it has barely been a week for me since Patternfall ended. I want to go home for a little while. I want to be able to relax without worrying about getting attacked. I left home because I wanted adventure, but this had been too much, too fast. But leaving right now seems unwise. Rygat has attacked isolated Amberites in the past, and there is no reason to believe she has changed her habits. I just wish I could have one night of peace.

I have hit upon a way to learn more about my mater. I have heard it said that Tir-na Nog'th is sometimes able to show visions of the past, or the future. It seems possible that some answers may lie there. Unfortunately, the city is prone to vanish when the moon is obscured. I have been advised that those wishing to journey to Tir-na Nog'th should have a companion remain on the ground and stay in Trump contact with them. This is difficult for me, since no one I know has a Trump of me. Well, Heather probably does, but I would rather not ask her. Shard possessed a sketch of me at one point. He has probably lost it since then, but I will ask, just in case. I wonder if it is possible to Trump someone and keep the contact open, without continuing to gaze at their card? It is something to try, at any rate.

One of the Chaosites has the ability to heal others. He was able repair most of the damage to Ahab's body, except for that done to his ears. There is a price for this, of course. Gramble needs control of your mind to do it. From what little I can understand, it seems to be related to shapeshifting in some way. Except he is shapeshifting someone else's body instead of his own. I would have liked to observe psychically, but he would not permit that. For obvious reasons, he wishes his techniques to remain secret. At least Ahab will not be lying around complaining of boredom anymore. I wish Gramble had been able to restore Ahab's hearing as well, but at least he tried. It may take up to a year for Ahab's hearing to return, news which did not make him happy. Hopefully Gramble's efforts, combined with Ahab's rapid healing abilities, will cause this to happen more quickly.
