Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who can be in the Broomball Club?

A: The broomball club is open to all students, alumni, and faculty of the University of Michigan. Not all members will be able to participate in tournaments, depending on team size and eligibility. Everyone, however, is welcome to practice and participate in all other club activities.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: First, the cost to join the club is $80 per semester. This covers Club Sports fees, ice time, and a little extra to pay for team equipment.

Tournaments cost about $50 each for registration, transportation, and lodging. We try to go to about one tournament per month.

You also need to buy equipment. You need a helmet, stick, and shoes to play in tournaments, and gloves and kneepads are highly recommended. While equipment might seem like it costs a lot, it's only a one-time expense and it still cheaper than hockey.

We have a number of sticks to use at practice if you don't have your own.

Q: When do you practice?

A: Currently we practice one night a week. Currently we practice on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning) at 1 AM, with some practices Wednesday night at 10 PM. The practice schedule is subject to change, so contact someone in the club if you need to know for sure. If you think we should practice more, send money.

Q: When is the season?

A: Our season runs fall and winter semester. You do not have to be member of the club for the whole year if you can only play one semester. We have tournaments about once a month on weekends.

Q: What are tournaments like?

A: Tournaments are usually held on a weekend. Teams are arranged in 4-team groups and play each other, so every team in the tournament plays at least 3 games. The top teams from round-robin play then advance to the playoffs, which are single-elimination. There is usually a hardest shot contest sometime during the weekend as well.

Q: Who do you play against?

A: Tournaments are open to anyone that registers a team. Since there aren't many other collegiate broomball teams (yet), we play against adult-league teams. Skill levels range from the once-a-week social teams to almost professional level elite teams.
