Photos By Kelly McKinnell
Susan's career
has spanned over two decades. She has been a member of
Magnum Photos, New York, since 1976. She is a woman who has
gone to places and been in situations were many others, men
and women, have dared not go. Susan has incredible courage,
strength and convictions to make the images she
does. Other than
working as a photojournalist and social documentarian using
still photography, she has coproduced and directed two
films, and written, photographed and produced a third.
Susan's eloquently written articles appear in a long list of
prestigious books, journals, and papers. She has acquired
several degrees, created educational curriculum using visual
materials for the New York City public schools, worked as an
artist in residence for the South Carolina and Mississippi
Arts commissions, shown in solo and group exhibitions, and
has works hanging in museums and private collections around
the world. As if this
weren't enough, Susan has edited three books; Learn To
See; Chile: From Within; El
Salvador, and
written three others; Carnival
Strippers,
Nicaragua, and most recently, Kurdistan: In the Shadow of
History. The list of
awards is impressive as well, but it was the MacArthur
Fellowship she received in 1992, which enabled her to
compile the images and extensive histories in the book
Kurdistan. It is a rare achievement; one reviewer
pointed out, that no one has made better use of their
MacArthur award than Susan Meiselas School
