Wendy Ewald

Wendy Ewald pioneered a practice that many professional photographers would fear: handing the camera over to her subjects. In doing so, she opened the world of photography to an unexpected populous: children and women from developing nations and disadvantaged communities. She has shared her approach in India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Morocco, Mexico, Appalachia and Canada. She is currently a research professor at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies. Her published books include Magic Eyes, I Dreamed I had a Girl in My Pocket, and others. She has received many honors, including the MacArthur Fellowship, the Lyndhurst Price, NEA Fellowship, and a Fulbright commission.
